Publisher's Summary

From rising star Stacia Kane comes the third novel in her dark and sexy Chess Putnam series, perfect for fans of Kim Harrison and Patricia Briggs.

Chess Putnam has a lot on her plate. Mangled human corpses have started to show up on the streets of Downside, and Chess’ bosses at the Church of Real Truth have ordered her to team up with the ultra-powerful Black Squad agency to crack the grisly case. Chess is under a binding spell that threatens death if she talks about the investigation, but the city’s most notorious crime boss—and Chess’ drug dealer—gets wind of her new assignment and insists on being kept informed. If that isn’t bad enough, a sinister street vendor appears to have information Chess needs. Only he’s not telling what he knows, or what it all has to do with the vast underground City of Eternity. Now Chess will have to navigate killer wraiths, First Elders, and a lot of seriously nasty magic—and the only man Chess can trust to help her through it all has every reason to want her dead.

Great continuation as Chess continues to grow

So I'm a fan of the Downside Ghosts series, this book was great. Bahni continues to rock out as Chess and makes Downside feel alive.

The story is also great, with chess *finally* dealing with her personal relationship issues, and realizing she has friends. The Villian is a bit meh, think Marvel Studios style villain, and Chess has some real self-hatred moments that are a bit overdone.

#Audible1

Love this series!

This is the third book in the series and I just love it. I listened to this book in one day! I couldnt help it, Chess's struggles are so real and she is just trying to make a go of it.
Bahni Turpin is a fantastic narrator, she brings all the charaters to life. She adds inflection when it should, screams when Chess screams, I love it and she is a great gift to the book.
My favorite scene is at the end when Chess and her rag tag team of thugs show up to kick ass and take names near the end of the book. I love that Chess is scared but still does what she can, and love! Oh my goodness Chess doesnt know anything about love. How will this play out in the next book? Im listening and loving every minute of it.

Flawed…but beautiful.

I love how flawed Chess is, but it’s an honest rendering of a person who has had trauma like this and made herself into someone she could count on when stuff gets real.
Bahni is a wonder, and the story pumps along like a speed train.
