About this listen

From the critically acclaimed author of The 25th Hour and When the Nines Roll Over and co-creator of the HBO series Game of Thrones, a captivating novel about war, courage, survival - and a remarkable friendship that ripples across a lifetime.

During the Nazis’ brutal siege of Leningrad, Lev Beniov is arrested for looting and thrown into the same cell as a handsome deserter named Kolya. Instead of being executed, Lev and Kolya are given a shot at saving their own lives by complying with an outrageous directive: secure a dozen eggs for a powerful Soviet colonel to use in his daughter’s wedding cake. In a city cut off from all supplies and suffering unbelievable deprivation, Lev and Kolya embark on a hunt through the dire lawlessness of Leningrad and behind enemy lines to find the impossible.

By turns insightful and funny, thrilling and terrifying, the New York Times best seller City of Thieves is a gripping, cinematic World War II adventure and an intimate coming-of-age story with an utterly contemporary feel for how boys become men.

What the critics say

"The novel tells a refreshingly traditional tale, driven by an often ingenious plot...[Benioff] shifts tone with perfect control - no recent novel I have read travels so quickly and surely between registers, from humor to devastation.” (The New York Times Book Review)

“This spellbinding story perfectly blends tragedy and comedy.” (USA Today)

“Splendid...Benioff has produced a funny, sad, and thrilling novel.” (Entertainment Weekly)

I have never looked at eggs the same way again. Very engaging and so tragic.

Classic

One of my Top 3 books of all time! I have been reading and listening to this book for the last 10+ years and will continue to read it for the coming years. Extremely well written, funny, sad, trilling and very personal. Hats off to the author. Highly recommended.

I had no idea it would be this good

Ron Perlman is a gift from God when it comes to narration. The interplay of humour and pain, anguish and trepidation with love and sincerity is quite wonderful. Will re-listen to shortly.

A very detailed and funny book

The book was very interesting and easy to follow, however some words being in another language made it a little difficult to understand at times. I recommend the book to boys mainly between 16-25 as the characters in the book are around that age.

Fantastic!

A fantastic book with excellent narration. My only comment is the Americanization of this historical fiction is evident. Otherwise perfect.

Such a captivating story

Narration is great! The story is so incredible, such an immersive way of telling a brutal story from a good humoured point of view without honouring people’s sacrifices and battles. So entertaining and so beautiful

Perfect.

Benioff's vivid and articulate descriptions paint a bleak yet beautiful depiction of life in WW2 Soviet Russia. Overall this is a wonderful production that seamlessly blends music with Ron Perlman's brilliant performance.

Great book, Great Listen

Really enjoyed this book, Ron Perlmans narritation was amazing and kept me very engaged. Haven't listen to many audio books but this was an amazing jumping off point. A story that is easy enough to follow but written in a very compelling way.

amazing story!

I just finished and I'm crying - because of the moving story, or the fact that it's done now, I'm not sure.
