They say no one from the convict settlement of Sydney Town crossed the steep ranges of the Blue Mountains until 1813. But the quick-witted convict Clancy Fitzgerald did it in 1798, dragging with him the proud, but reluctant, Eliza Philips. Faced with constant danger and wrenching isolation, Clancy and Eliza found themselves pale-skinned strangers in a land of ancient traditions and spiritual beliefs.©1995 Evan Green (P)2012 Bolinda Publishing Historical Fiction

What the critics say

“Clancy Fitzgerald's travels through Australia as an escaped transported convict impart considerable historical fiction in this novel. Richard Aspel efficiently narrates a cast of convicts, British servicemen, townspeople and native Australians. Throughout this saga, we hear the hopes and burdens of newcomers, fears of natives whose land is being encroached upon, and clashes between captives and captors. Aspel illustrates the changing geography of the land with the movement of characters. A great deal of history and tradition from down under can be realized from this story.” (AudioFile Magazine)
