it’s as if their ability to get there at all gives them the right to stay forever.”
There was a turning point in Michael Lewis’s life, in a baseball game when he was fourteen years old. The irascible and often terrifying Coach Fitz put the ball in his hand with the game on the line and managed to convey such confident trust in Lewis’ ability that the boy had no choice but to live up to it. “I didn’t have words for it then, but I do now: I am about to show the world, and myself, what I can do.”
The coach’s message was not simply about winning, but about self-respect, sacrifice, courage, and endurance. In some ways, and even now, thirty years later, Lewis still finds himself trying to measure up to what Coach Fitz expected of him.

the vast majority of youth coaches skirt their role of helping children build valuable adult skills. Perseverance is not a born skill, its something the people learn, usually at a young age. coaches have such a major part in this
i was a hockey goalie, and I had a coach named dean manzuk. I remember many times he pushed us in different and unique ways, and we learned respect for the team. i remember one day i let in a goal late in a game and lost the game by one goal, and after the game I didn't take it that seriously. Dean looked me square in the face and said "I hope you have tears in your eyes".. after failing to convinve my parents how rude the coach was, i realized i needed to change, and it was the best life lesson i ever had
love it- the world needs more coaches like this
