"Decent" Free Option
I had thought that this book would focus on new characters.. using New Orleans PD Detectives Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya as occasional interlopers in the story - driving the investigation forward as little more than a plot device.
I was wrong.
Bentz is a central character in the story: developing a relationship with beautiful, bellicose psychic 'Olivia Benchet' (while trying to hunt down a religious zealot Serial Killer that she saw in a vision) and exploring the homicide investigator's back story & his relationship with a College-aged daughter. 'Cold Blooded' fits into a true "series" nicely.
The book displays Lisa Jackson's impressive skills at writing realistic innuendo-laced dialogue, acceptable vocabulary/prose, and an appreciated attention paid to her signature romance & sexual tension.
Unfortunately, she also makes a couple of mistakes:
• Jackson attempts to pull off TWO Love Triangles in the book - an overreach
• The almost exact psychopathy in the killer in Book One of the series ('Hot Blooded') drives the villain in this one. It came across as annoyingly lazy
I was left with an odd combination of overwhelmed and incurious.
Reader Alyssa Bresnahan is a capable narrator - but notably undistinguished on this recording, too. She exhibits professional diction, creditable timbre & cadence, and a firm understanding of the author's intended tone.. but does nothing to make her performance stand out (completely ignoring accents like "a thick Texas Drawl" called for by the text, for example). The overall presentation is "average".
Altogether, the audiobook merits 6 stars out of 10. It was a serviceable Romantic Suspense-Thriller as a 'Plus' option.. but not distinctive enough to rate a Credit if they ask for one.
