Alfred Henry Lewis (1855-1914) was an investigative journalist, lawyer, novelist, editor, and short story writer, who sometimes published under the pseudonym Dan Quin. As a writer of genre fiction, his most successful works were Westerns from his Wolfville series. The short story "Colonel Sterett's Panther Hunt" appears the series The Wit and Humor of America, edited by Marshall P. Wilder. It is a rumination by a cattleman on his experiences with mountain lions, which he calls “panthers.” The spelling of words deviates from the conventional, and is based on the pronunciation of the narrator.
