By combining plants carefully, plants can help each other in terms of providing nutrients in the soil, offering protection from wind or sun, and also by attracting beneficial insects or acting as a decoy for harmful pests. Just as there are good companion planting combinations, there are also bad combinations. Some plants actually restrict the growth of other plants either by competing for nutrition in the same way, or by excluding incompatible orders, scents, or chemicals.
