About this listen

The pulse-pounding return of Conan, the most iconic fantasy hero in popular culture

Conan the Barbarian, the world’s most famous fantasy hero, returns in an all-new novel tied directly to the famous works by his legendary creator, Robert E. Howard.

In this story, set early in his life, Conan has left his northern homeland to cut a bloody swath across the legendary Hyborian Age. A mercenary, a soldier, a thief, and a pirate, he faces conquering armies, malicious sorcerers, and monstrous creatures—against which he wields only the sword held in his powerful grasp.

The first new Conan novel in more than a decade, Blood of the Serpent leads directly into one of Robert E. Howard’s most famous sword-and-sorcery adventures, “Red Nails,” which as a bonus feature is included in this volume.

It was ok

I love Conan and was excited for a new story, but it was a bit disappointing and underwhelming. It was expected Conan story telling but was hoping for a bit more. The narration was not my favorite. He had this way where he made sentence sound like questions. Something in the tone. Wish this was overall better.

Classic Swords & Sorcery

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The performance was solid, and the two stories were pure Conan. S.M. Sterling wove a great take on the Barbarian. His story was equal parts Edgar Rice Boroughs, Robert E Howard, with a pinch of a Zane Grey western. The world of Hyperboria has never been rendered more clearly in my opinion. Sterling joins the ranks of authors who’ve spun amazing Conan stories: L. Sprague de Camp, Lin Carter, and Robert Jordan. The original story in this volume penned by Robert E Howard contains the anachronisms and problematic issues of his time, but if you can take that for what it is and enjoy the story itself there is a lot to like here. You can clearly see the bones of the structure that would one day become Dungeons & Dragons, and inspire a host of sword & sorcery fantasy authors.
