About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The definitive account of the rise and fall of the world's fastest plane from British Airways' former Chief Concorde Pilot.

October 24th, 2023 will mark 20 years since Concorde disappeared from our skies. Yet still Mike Bannister, the last Concorde Chief Pilot, faces the same questions:

  • Why is she no longer flying?
  • Where is her replacement?
  • And what really happened on that tragic afternoon in July 2000, when the crash of Flight 4590 grounded the Concorde forever?

Concorde is an enthralling personal account of what it takes to fly planes faster than the speed of sound, and of the events that lay behind 114 needless deaths—the 113 victims of the crash and, ultimately, Concorde herself.

Highly enjoyable and entertaining listening

An absolutely fantastic narrative of a personal and national story. Thank you so much Captain Bannister. Very few books have made such a lasting impression. Highly appealing to an analytical person with a few interesting human story detours along the way.

Answered a lot of questions

I have always had a lot of questions about why Concorde never flew again. For the most part, this book answered these, and more. For the remaining questions, the answers were probably here, they just got past me. Aviation geeks will really appreciate this. There could be no better author for this book than Mike, as he flew her more than any other pilot and was involved in the crash investigation. Definitely recommended.

Made me feel part of engineering history

I have enjoyed this book through and through: the story of a superb conquest of nature adapted for human use, a privilege that we can only hope to be part in the future. The honesty of story telling and regard to actual facts is also a tribute to all engineering decisions driven by economics. Thank you, Mike Bannister, for bringing this beautiful machine back to life for us!
