A fantastic and harrowing tale of a troubled man

Great narration! Very expressive and very different so you can tell who each character is. Boy do the Russians write depressing books. A roller coaster of guilt and folly.

A Great Insight

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I was hesitant at first but the speaker did an amazing job at capturing the emotion from the characters

Now having finished it I can see why it has stood the test of time

Tearful and Political

What can be said abt crime and punishment that hasn't already been said? Its a masterful look into the human mind and how it functions. Dostoevsky manages to put you into the mind of a murderer who belives he himself is a Napoleon Bonapart allowed to flaunt moral taboos. Despite this, you find yourself rooting for him.

For me it is hard to not see a political undertone to this book. To quote dostoevsky, "You can judge the degree of a civilization by seeing its prisons". We must srsly rethink our prisons, retributive justice does not work. It leads to high recidivism rates and makes crime a cyclical cycle. If the Scandanavians can implement such a system of rehibilitation with amazing results why can't we? "America is a different country, apples and oranges". Well, last time I checked humans live in Scandanavia not aliens.

Finally, importantly, Anthony Heald knocks this out of the park. One of the best narrators I have ever had the pleasure of having for an audio book. He never faults and he always keeps you engaged.

Dark and maddening

The story was dark and filled with fleeting thoughts and psychosis as the main character spirals into insanity propelled by systemic social inequalities and poverty. It was raw and intriguing and not romanticized in the least. Good performance by the narrator he really made the story come to life.

First time reading a classic with Audible

I thoroughly enjoyed using Audible to read along with a hard copy. It made the characters and their various names much less confusing. The details of the story were not as difficult to retain by listening and reading together. I think either only listening or only silent reading the story would have taken far longer to get through and less enjoyable. Looking forward to reading many more classics this way.

A Classic with good reason

This book was amazing... great story, well developed characters, etc. The story itself is well fleshed out and even though it belongs in a world I would barely recognize it does not feel alien to me.

The story narrative is a bit simplistic as old books tend to be, no jump in times, no dual perspectives, etc... but this is not a criticism, just a comment for those looking at a bit of an insight

Anthony Heald (the narrator of this audiobook) is a TREASURE... what an amazing performance!... I will probably end up listening to any book he narrates regardless of genre... he is THAT GOOD!

Performance was incredible.

The performance of this book brought already great writing to life! The distinction between characters, emotions, and intonation was spot on and made this so entertaining! The story itself was great, really enjoyed it!
