About this listen

Delve into the mind of Critical Role’s most charming villain in this original novel that chronicles Lucien’s early life and his fateful meeting with the Mighty Nein.

Lucien has always been able to spin a bad situation to his advantage. From his childhood on the dangerous streets of Shadycreek Run to his years living off the grid and learning blood magic from the Claret Orders, the charismatic blood hunter will find a way to get the upper hand.

When Lucien is on a job in the frozen wastelands of Eiselcross with his fellow mercenaries, a rough-and-tumble crew called the Tombtakers, fate leads him to a mysterious journal in the ruins of an ancient city. The book speaks of the Somnovem, nine beings who can grant Lucien power beyond imagining—if he is able to find them and free them from captivity.

Intrigued by this opportunity, Lucien pores over the journal—but the more he reads, the stranger things become. The nine whisper to him in dreams and waking visions. Time slips away, along with Lucien’s grasp on reality. And tattoos of red eyes begin appearing on his skin. . . .

With the ability to reshape the world within his grasp, Lucien ignores all warning signs. He has always bent fortune to his will, and nothing—not even death—will stop him now.

Written by New York Times bestselling author Madeleine Roux, Critical Role: The Mighty Nein—The Nine Eyes of Lucien explores the meteoric rise and fall of one of Critical Role’s most notorious and tragic figures.

The audiobook brings this story to life

It was such a treat to listen to Robbie Daymond narrate the story of Lucien from this new perspective. And hearing the cast of Critical Role jump in at their own parts was brilliant!

Perfect for Fans

This story offers so many explanations and facts of one of the best villains, detailing their descent and madness and motivations in vivid detail. There are nods and acknowledgments that fit wonderfully into the lore, and history that builds so much onto the character.

The performances are wonderful, with the reprise of roles a welcome depth for the story that reinforces the collective nature of the game. The narrator is perfect in his beat and cadence with a few foibles but overall excellent work making the story and characters feel like living, breathing pieces.

If you enjoy Campaign 2 and the Mighty Nein, very easy to get lost in the story and just enjoy the depth of the world they’ve created.

Everything you wondered about for Lucien's story is answered. Amazing voice acting (obviously). Really loved the writing as well. 💜

A must-listen for a fan of the Nein.

Gave me everything I wanted out of it. The ending felt a bit rushed, but not so much that it took away from the overall story.

Great story and added Lore

For fans of Critical Role, this is a must. This added so much depth to the character of Lucien and Molly and filled in so many interesting spots in the Mighty Nein campaign. It was so interesting to get the flip side of the adventure from Lucien’s perspective. Also, Robbie Daymond once again crushes the narration. 5 stars all around.

Tragically beautiful

I have watched Campaign 2 four times now. The Aeor ark was always my favorite and I had very strong feelings for Molly and Lucien. This book brought everything together in the most fascinating bow. Robbie's narration kept me hooked and made me drink every word he said and having the full cast reprise their roles in the story stepped it up to an even higher level.
Thank you to the Critical Role team and to Madeleine Roux for humanizing and deepening this character that I love so much. Thank you for making me cry and for feeding my hunger for lore.

Long may they reign.

Long May He Reign

Lucien has always been a compelling and charismatic character, so this is perfect for any fans of Critical Role who wanted a deeper look into his past, as well as his rebirth and race to the haunting realm of Aeor.

This is something that has clearly been written with the fans in mind. Trying to look at it from an outside eye is difficult because there are many moments and time skips that will only make complete sense to the fans. Otherwise, it comes off as a little jarring and confusing.

Lucien remains as charming as ever, though the depths and journey to his madness are explored more fully in this book. He and the Tombtakers are more defined and have a greater bond, much like the Mighty Nein. It's interesting to see them as the heroes from Lucien's morally grey perspective, especially as Lucien begins to battle his own mind.

Since much of the plot follows key moments in Lucien's life and the action scenes are relatively simple, the book moves very, very quickly to its bittersweet ending. I would have liked a little more detail and interaction at some points, but I still enjoyed the charm and imagination that Critical Role always brings.

I highly recommend the audiobook, as each member of the cast puts their heart and soul into their lines, and Robbie Daymond's extensive vocal talents are on full display. This is everything a fan of Critical Role could hope to read.

Long may he reign.

Perfect for Mighty Nein fans

But probably won’t appeal to anyone who isn’t a Critical Role fan.

SPOILERS AHEAD

This is basically fanfiction (and there’s nothing wrong with that) to dive into a character who was gone from the story too soon for fans and then reappears changed. Since the majority of fans loved and adored Molly, there was so much to discover. As I wasn’t much of a fan of this character, the story wasn’t as engaging for me, but Robbie Daymond’s performance makes it an incredible journey and I’ll absolutely listen to it again.
