About this listen

A twisted tale of murder, magic and salvation.

Heather Keynes’ teenage son died in a tragic car accident. Or so she thinks. However, deep in the countryside, an ancient evil has awoken...intent on hunting local residents. No-one is safe.

When Heather takes a closer look at a series of coincidental deaths, she is drawn reluctantly into the company of an odd group of elderly Guardians. Who are they, and what is their connection to the Great Oak?

Why do they believe only Heather can put an end to centuries of horror?

Most important of all, who is the mysterious old woman in the forest, and what is it that feeds her anger?

witchy

I found having a middle aged woman as the main character a nice change from what I usually read. it was fun listening to the story unfold.

Rather disappointed

Likes: the crone and the guardian portions of the story, as well as nod to classic witch stories, was well done.

Dislikes: The reader voice maintained the same almost monotone quality throughout the book with little emotion or drama. The main character, Heather, is as cliched as they come with no originality at all other than being in her 40’s. The author chose to write the main character as deeply flawed, self-absorbed, highly insecure, and lacking any leadership qualities or female strength that could explain why she was the “chosen one” while also displaying the classic characteristics of a Mother-Son Enmeshment Syndrome. SPOILERS - And yes, I have survived loss of significant persons and I understand the character was grieving but this mothers relationship with her son was one of the creepiest things about this book - she will definitely become one of those over clingy monster moms with a mommy's boy son now that he has been saved. In addition the romance between the main character and the professor seemed nothing more than a distraction, and filler material as it provided no real value to story overall. Furthermore, the relationship dynamics between the main character and the professor was the stuff of pure fantasy as no beginning relationship would work out that way.
