About this listen

A team of adventurers enters an epic trial of wits, magic, and monsters in this thrilling new fantasy series set within the Arcane Ascension universe.

Parties attempting to claim the treasures of the Tortoise Spire of Dalenos are usually composed of six professional climbers. But following a near-disastrous climb, Team Guiding Star Legacy finds itself two challengers short. With Nieve as the frontline fighter, Sage as the strategist, Lani as the healer, and Emiko as the spellcaster, they need a couple powerful allies to round out the squad.

The first new recruit, Hane, is a fighting and stealth specialist, while the second, Aldis, has quite the talent for teleportation magic. Though their individual reasons for scaling the spire vary—wealth, fame, favor—the team’s shared goal is thus: fight, win, ascend, and repeat. All in the hopes of one day making it to the top, where the goddess awaits to grant them the objects of their deepest desires.

To achieve this goal, they must master escalating levels of fire and ice, dangerous creatures, and confounding illusions. Whether facing a threat to their bodies, their magic, or their minds, each of the climbers accepts the risks. And bending the rules is part of the challenge. Some call this cheating; others call it winning.

But no test is ever straightforward. Because Guiding Star Legacy is being judged, and their next contest is one they aren’t meant to survive. Ascend or fall, the quest is only just beginning.

What the critics say

"Nicol’s fantasy novel offers a promising start to a new spinoff series, set in former role-playing game designer Rowe’s popular Arcane Ascension world...surprising elements and shocking twists [lead] to a harrowing final life-and-death battle and [set] up an intriguing premise for a continuing series....Fans of anime, RPGs, and the authors’ previous work will be eager to follow Guiding Star Legacy’s further adventures." —Kirkus Reviews

one of his best and worst.

good characters, lots of action. kind of rpg fantasy. quite a few moments where the angst is just too unbelievably drawn out.

Great story bad Narrative

Another great story added to the universe Andrew Rowe created. I strongly recommend this story, it's another epic adventure. The narrative was not well directed, They pick 2 amazing narrators So the potential was very high, unfortunately, They each read their own chapter Alternating and making the voices for every character in that chapter creating overlapping Voices. I found this to be very confusing. I imagine the story in my head as the story gets tolled, so having two voices for the same character was a bad production choice. This could have easily been fixed by making Travis read all the male voices and Emily read all the female voices. Would have made the story far more enjoyable to listen to. I do hope this gets fixed for any following books.

Fun book

Starts off as the generic RPG tower climb but some bold choices are made in the last act

Fell in love with all the characters

Took me a little bit to get into the story but once I did I just fell in love with all the characters and their interactions. The way the perspective shifts from character to character through the story gives you an insight into each character's motivations, goals and feelings. Really enjoyed it!

Decent, but a little disappointed

I felt like the story started in the middle. The whole book I struggled to grasp who’s who and feel anything for any character.

Amazing Doungeon Crawl.

What to see some big fights and a perilous journey, what some unbeatable odds and some lateral thinking, some tricks and jokes? well look no further.

In the magical world created in this universe you can climb a Spire created by the godess to gain treasure, fortune, fame and power you could try and reach the top and have a wish granted by the very godess you pray to. But in doing so you sign on for playing games of puzzles, chance and straight up endurance as you battle monsters and God beasts to try and complete floors. Is the risk of stepping on a hidden floor switch setting off a trap with the reward? This team thinks so.

As they play the games and try to think of better ways to get farther in the tower the safest ways possible it's hard to tell what is in the spirit of the rules as per the goddesses teachings. A Godess who thinks sending 15 year Olds in to fight monsters without any magic to gain an attunement so they can be able to weild magic and try to climb higher and gain the status that comes with being attuned. Who values lateral thinking and finding non- standard solutions to problems. how do you tell where the line is? when something goes from non-standard to cheating? well the answer to that things that were hard and challenging become damn near impossible.

loyalties change, friends are made, secrets are learned and opportunities to make a difference are lost.

Grab some popcorn and some chocolate.....your going to need both because we are about to embark on an adventure that feels distinctly like a Rollercoaster of emotions.

Fun adventure, narrators need to organize.

TLDR; Great book; performers need to organize.

Great Adventure, characters are interesting and the way the story is written makes you feel like you know them.

However, narrators need to at least say names and nouns the same way. Would be better if each character didn't have two voices.

A Perfect Addition to the Greater Series

This is another great addition to Andrew Rowe’s universe. I was a bit sceptical about the co-writing as I am a big fan of Rowe’s writing style, but Nicol’s addition brought a new, slightly darker dimension to the story which I am definitely a fan of.

As for the story itself, fantastic. It took darker turns toward the end which I was certainly not expecting, but definitely enjoyed greatly.

I highly recommend this book if you are looking an amazing fantasy story which skims the bounds of a greater universe!

Absolutely great story to peace in with the other ones

Overall great book but someone should have talked to the narrators of this book because the pronunciation for the major cities and gods change from the others series of books to this one

Excellent Story, Narration Missteps

Another excellent addition to this ever growing world! I enjoyed that we got to spend some more time in the spires, got new characters, and cannot wait to see how this fits into the larger universe.

While I enjoyed the narrators and thought they did a good job overall, it appears that proper attention was not given to replicating the pronunciations of certain words as they have been pronounced previously (specifically the name of the goddess and the names of the countries). I found this difference in pronunciations quite jarring and would break the immersion of the experience. Hopefully this is rectified for future books in this series and narrators are given pronunciation guides and/or listen to the previous books in order to ensure pronunciation uniformity across the multiple series in this universe.
