Publisher's Summary

For anyone who wants to be heard at work, earn that overdue promotion, or win more clients, deals, and projects, the best-selling author of Captivate, Vanessa Van Edwards, shares her advanced guide to improving professional relationships through the power of cues.

What makes someone charismatic? Why do some captivate a room, while others have trouble managing a small meeting? What makes some ideas spread, while other good ones fall by the wayside? If you have ever been interrupted in meetings, overlooked for career opportunities or had your ideas ignored, your cues may be the problem - and the solution.

Cues - the tiny signals we send to others 24/7 through our body language, facial expressions, word choice, and vocal inflection - have a massive impact on how we, and our ideas, come across. Our cues can either enhance our message or undermine it.

In this entertaining and accessible guide to the hidden language of cues, Vanessa Van Edwards teaches you how to convey power, trust, leadership, likeability, and charisma in every interaction. You’ll learn:

  • Which body language cues assert, “I’m a leader, and here’s why you should join me.”
  • Which vocal cues make you sound more confident
  • Which verbal cues to use in your résumé, branding, and emails to increase trust (and generate excitement about interacting with you)
  • Which visual cues you are sending in your profile pictures, clothing, and professional brand

Whether you're pitching an investment, negotiating a job offer, or having a tough conversation with a colleague, cues can help you improve your relationships, express empathy, and create meaningful connections with lasting impact. This is an indispensable guide for entrepreneurs, team leaders, young professionals, and anyone who wants to be more influential.

This book should be REQUIRED reading!!!

After reading captivate, I was so excited to know that Vanessa was cooking up another book. She did not disappoint!! Cues is full of easy-to-apply tips for everyday life AND for business. After listening to the whole book, I can now identify my own cues and I can’t unsee them everywhere!! This book was indeed interesting, entertaining due to the anecdotes, and very applicable. Plus, the digital bonuses are awesome! You can watch videos while you listen and Vanessa has clearly put in tons of hours into this project. Great work!!!!!

Practical tips

Thank you Vanessa. This book has doable and easy to follow steps and tips. it opened my eyes to many cues that I unconsciously give out to others. I will be more aware of my non verbal cues. Definitely a book to read a few times and practice the tips.

Immediate impact on my interactions.

I just finished this today, but already it is having an effect on how I interact with others. There is a lot of information in here so I will need to review it again. It gives food for thought and insights into everything you do everytime you do it.

Powerful to understand how to read others AND how I’m being perceived!

This was so helpful for me as an individual, a presenter and a team leader! Better understanding what signals I am sending others without even knowing it (both verbal and non-verbal) and how they may be received has been so helpful in allowing me to be more intentional and thus successful in my interactions with others! Especially in leading and interacting with a team - seeing how I was sending mixed signals before that was resulting in confusion and under-performance.
Great book to have on my shelf to continue to revisit and learn from!

Not a re listen

This is a book for someone who is extremely shy who really doesn’t know how to talk to other people who has barely any social skills she’s mentioned some things which is easily said than done but needs practice the stuff she says pretty much requires you to actually have a real life coach to help you practical is better than theory. She mentioned Brené Brown Mel Robbins and Alice Ross as a inspiration
