Publisher's Summary

The power-hungry High Lord of Kalare has launched a rebellion against the aging First Lord, Gaius Sextus, who with the loyal forces of Alera must fight beside the unlikeliest of allies - the equally contentious High Lord of Aquitaine. Meanwhile, young Tavi of Calderon joins a newly formed legion under an assumed name even as the ruthless Kalare unites with the Canim, bestial enemies of the realm whose vast numbers spell certain doom for Alera. When treachery from within destroys the army's command structure, Tavi finds himself leading an inexperienced, poorly equipped legion - the only force standing between the Canim horde and the war-torn realm.

What the critics say

"Butcher deftly mixes military fantasy and political intrigue in the rollicking third Codex Alera book...Readers will cheer Tavi every step of the way.” (Publishers Weekly)

"The author of the Dresden Files modern fantasy series is equally familiar with old-style, ‘classic’ fantasy, demonstrating his skill in complex plotting and vivid world crafting to masterly effect.” (Library Journal)

“Plenty of military action and some interesting revelations about Tavi’s past make this one of the best volumes yet in this entertaining series.” (Locus)

story is superb as usual and the telling of it makes u feel as if you are truly there. She totally gets the characters. I have read the whole series but doing it this way is just as good.

Excellent

It's rare to find a series in which each book is as good as the last. The Codex Alera is that elusive treasure. the first book is excellent. Subsequent books continue with interesting characters, twisty plots, delightful surprises, and just page-turning story.

Great Series

Have come to enjoy the Coda Alexa series. This is the best written and performed book so far; story line is becoming more complex, characters weave in and out of the story well. Narrator does a very good job of trying to individuate tones and voices for each character.

Well worth the credit!

Story captivates right from the start.Narrator goes a great job.My only criticism would be the odd, disjointed blaring of trumpets strewn throughout the book. They serve no purpose at all.

Cursor’s Fury

Terrific character development. Plenty of action although some personal encounters are a tad overcooked.

All in all an entertaining continuation in the series.
