About this listen

Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever.

Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

Thank you for this!

I read this story as a kid and loved it, but reading it now when I’m older took me to a very special place, loving its journey but saddened at its inevitable end. I’m glad to have experienced it again!

brilliant.

This was a great tribute to a wonderful story teller. A wonderful insight into the first nations people of the Americas and their challenges in confronting the European tide that swept them aside without thought, compassion or mercy.

Great Version of an Intriguing Novel

I confess that I don't remember much of the 1990 Kevin Costner film.. other than some spectacular Cinematography. It turns out the story by Michael Blake is well-written, well-paced, and thought-provoking. The theme of looking at the challenges faced by Native Americans as Europeans spread West - from the POV of an isolated Civil War soldier adopted into a Comanche tribe - is handled sensitively but realistically.
Less fortunately, the story is a little bit formulaic (including an obligatory pretty love-interest and clichéd "bad guys"), but it doesn't feel particularly contrived. In addition, the "flashback" technique to build characters is slightly overdone (but it didn't detract from the narrative too badly - the story still flows nicely).

The quality performance from George Guidall is a definite selling point for this recording, too: Guidall constantly sounds like he needs to clear saliva from the corners of his mouth, but delivers exemplary diction, cadence, and voice-acting.. and a genuinely impressive explanatory tone that fits the text *perfectly*. This project was cast beautifully.

Altogether, I rate this iteration of 'Dances With Wolves' 9.5 out of 10 stars. I was able to get this book on sale - and it was easily worth the $3.10 CDN I paid for it. It would actually merit a Credit.

Too late for regrets. We're still apologizing.

This is a great story, which inspired, of course, a great movie. The protagonist's viewpoint is informed by modern sentiment, which would not have been available to him but for his isolation.

Unexpected Pleasure, riveting

I had seen the movie years ago, but the bookwas so superior to it. I do understand why Kevin Costner wanted to make it into a movie.
