Publisher's Summary

Audiobook 1 of the Dark Imperium trilogy.

The first phase of the Indomitus Crusade is over, and the conquering primarch, Roboute Guilliman, sets his sights on home. The hordes of his traitorous brother, Mortarion, march on Ultramar, and only Guilliman can hope to thwart their schemes with his Primaris Space Marine armies.

Listen to It Because

Experience the beginning of the Plague Wars, as the Imperium's lord regent fights to reclaim his home from the Death Guard and their daemonic allies.

The Story

Fell times have come to the galaxy. Cadia has fallen, destroyed by the onslaught of Chaos. A Great Rift in the warp has opened, and from its depths spew daemons and the horrors of Old Night.

But all hope is not lost… A hero, long absent, has returned, and with him comes the wrath of the Ultramarines reborn. Roboute Guilliman has arisen to lead the Imperium out of darkness on a crusade the likes of which has not been seen since the fabled days of the Emperor.

But never before have the forces of Ruin amassed in such numbers, and nowhere is safe from despoliation. From the dreaded Scourge Stars come the hordes of the Plaguefather, Lord Nurgle, and their pustulent eye is fixed on Macragge. As the Indomitus Crusade rages on, Guilliman races to Ultramar and a confrontation with the Death Guard.

Written by Guy Haley. Narrated by John Banks.

Ultramarines in indominus era

A great start to see how Guilliman see the imperium in the indominus era. As a w40k fan, I knew the general story of the plague war, but not how it start.

Worth listening to for neophyte and veteran Warhammer fans

I really enjoyed this book. The narrator was a great choice. His range works well with the gruff nature of the space marines. He also did a good job with the servants of Nurgle.
As for the writing itself, I found parts of it a little jarring and unrealistic. An example of this is all the times space marines and soldiers engaged in close combat with demons or chaos space marines stopped to exclaim about the Emperor or Guilliman.
It felt a little awkward and overdone.
Otherwise a great story!

A fantastic story for newcomers and veterans alike

John Banks delivered an incredible performance, from Primaris Captains, to Guilliman, and to Nurgle daemons alike. The story is well written and slightly slow-paced, but it is understandable for a first book in a trilogy. The final battle is wonderful! It's very interesting to see the debate on the Emperor's nature, Faith against Reason (like in The Last Church)
Highly recommend it!

It's a decent book. One of the better 40k stories.

If you wanted more than combat and some flowery descriptions of the 40k world you will disappointed. Very little actually happens over the course of this book. And aside from Guilliman, there isn't much in the way of a decent character to sink your teeth into. There just isnt much in the way of character growth or an arc to speek of. However! This is a must read for any 40k fan. If you wanted deep stories, go read Brandon Sanderson.

Enjoyable, engaging story of the Primarch.

Okay, this is my first audiobook review, so here goes.

I overall really enjoyed the story, I have only recently started to dig into the WH40k books and started here. I have listened to other books and I really found the reading performance well done and engaging to the story itself. The story kept me interested and although the story does leapfrog in time, I found the story easy to follow. The writing did a great job of manifesting the worlds and characters in my mind. Overall I really liked this book and plan to move on directly to the next immediately.
