About this listen
In 1985, two 27-year-old friends left their suburban Detroit homes for a hunting trip in rural Michigan. When they did not return, their families and police suspected foul play. For 18 years, no one could prove a thing. Then, a relentless investigator got a witness to talk, and a horrifying story emerged.
In 2003, this bizarre case hit the glare of the criminal justice system, as prosecutors charged two brothers, Raymond and Donald Duvall, with murder. With no bodies ever found, the case hinged on the testimony of one terrified witness who saw a bloody scene unfold - and who was still nearly too frightened to talk.
Now, the truth behind an 18-year-old mystery is revealed against the backdrop of an unusual, electrifyingly dramatic trial. Raymond and Donald Duvall bragged to friends that they killed their victims, chopped up their bodies, and fed them to pigs. A Michigan jury soon had evidence of this brutally methodical execution - evidence that would lead a shocked courtroom through the heart of evil and beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Passable Documentary
I had no idea how horrible the Trailer-Park Trash is in Michigan. The individuals in this Tom Henderson exposé are every bit as creepy as the isolated swamp people in Louisiana or the inbred 'Deliverance'-styled freaks of the Ozarks. God Bless him, Henderson tries to make the "Good-Ol-Boy" victims in this crime look tragically sympathetic.. but can't hide how awfully they treated waitresses and businessmen in the little town from which they went missing on a hunting trip - creeping on locals, making threats, pinching random girl asses, etc. Ugh. Yeah, they didn't deserve to die, but I had trouble caring about *anyone* involved in this case - leading me to lose interest annoyingly frequently.
Regardless, Henderson's vocabulary/prose is creditable, his research is extensive, and his storytelling is effective. This is a reasonably enjoyable genre entry overall.
As to presentation: Prolific reader Jonathan Davis turns in a commendable narration. Notwithstanding occasional injudicious deep breaths that break up his cadence, Davis demonstrates exemplary diction, timbre, voice-acting, and tone.
Less fortunately, Tantor Audio engineers edit the recording aggressively - to the extent of actually cutting some sentences short. The resultant listening product is distinctly "average".
This audiobook merits 7 stars out of 10. If you can get it from the 'Plus' catalog, do so (it's a serviceable True Crime offering).. but if they ask for a Credit, keep browsing.
