About this listen

High above Daros, 16-year-old Brecca Vereen prepares to unload a cargo of trade goods aboard her father's ship, The Envy's Price. Nellen Vereen shows her a mysterious artifact bound for a contact below, one that will earn them a lot of credits, and one that they definitely won't be declaring to customs.

Materializing out of nowhere, alien invaders fire upon all ships, destroy the jump gate, and knock out communications. The Envy's Price is crippled, and as her father tries to guide it down from orbit, Brecca rescues the illicit artifact and jettisons in a life pod to an uncertain fate below.

On the flagship of the invading fleet, Navigator Frim tries to persist within the cruel autocracy of the Zeelin Hegemony, under constant threat of death, but wishing for something better. And then she notices a whisper of radiation above Daros - the trail of a cloaked Vonar ship. What are they doing in the midst of all this? And will the captain kill her just for revealing this disagreeable news?

Fun Sci-Fi Standalone!

Please know first that I got a code for this book from the author for an honest review.

I enjoyed this story immensely! It is fun, goes many directions that I wasn't anticipating, and extremely creative. There are so many unique aliens that don't just feel like humans but with 'alien descriptions', they actually feel strange and otherworldly. Some even have a synesthesia-esque ability which I really really enjoyed.

I do have some qualms however: Brecca, although she is 16, can sometimes just feel like a 30 year old or even a bit of a Mary Sue. I think more often than not this isn't the case; but there are a few moments where I had to shake my head and go... okay I get it. There are also points where Lyra (spelling?) the AI can get a bit repetitive, but that's the nature of her responses and I felt the author executed these scenes probably as best as they could be done.

In regards to the narration I felt that she was perfect for Brecca, enjoyable Navigator Frim, and generally good for most other characters. But there are a couple that have an unpolished feel or maybe just over the top voice acting. These kind of reminded me of a parent ready to their child and doing voices. But again the majority were great.

Overall I think that there is a lot to enjoy here, and can be accessible to new readers and experienced sci-fi readers alike. 4.25/5 overall for me. (I gave the story a 5/5 rating because I felt the author walked a tight rope in a lot of respects but executed really well. While I gave the narration performance and overall scores 4/5).
