About this listen

A former slave fighting for justice. A reclusive warrior who no longer believes it exists. And a dark magic that will entangle their fates.

Ripped from a forgotten homeland as a child, Tisaanah learned how to survive with nothing but a sharp wit and a touch of magic. But the night she tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life.

Desperate to save the best friend she left behind, Tisaanah journeys to the Orders, the most powerful organizations of magic Wielders in the world. But to join their ranks, she must complete an apprenticeship with Maxantarius Farlione, a handsome and reclusive fire wielder who despises the Orders.

The Orders's intentions are cryptic, and Tisaanah must prove herself under the threat of looming war. But even more dangerous are her growing feelings for Maxantarius. The bloody past he wants to forget may be the key to her future...or the downfall of them both.

But Tisaanah will stop at nothing to save those she abandoned. Even if it means gambling in the Orders's deadly games. Even if it means sacrificing her heart.

Even if it means wielding death itself.

Contains mature themes.

Phenomenal

Storyline was excellent- very entrancing! Voice actors were perfect for the story as well and matched the character descriptions quite accurately I found.

Power through it

As many have stated, the narration isn’t great. Too high pitched at points from the female narrator and the male was taking big gasping breaths that were distracting! I struggled to get into the story because of it but I powered through and was glad I did! I really enjoyed the story, kind of gives Throne of Glass vibes and that’s one of my favourite series ever!

Book#1 Excellent set up!!

Great book and am looking forward to hearing the next one. It's a great story but if you looking for spice you might want to skip this one. I will edit this if book 2 gets a little spice. I loved it tho, a whole new world to explore! I love long series!!

I liked the voice acting

Loved the story I’ve read it before but I enjoy listening to audiobooks while getting work done. This was an insanely relaxing voice actor and her voice reminded me of Keira Knightely. Loving it.

Such a great story!

Loved this very much. Carissa Broadbent can do no wrong - I am convinced she is a goddess among writers. The story is fantastic. The world building is so good, although a little bit intricate. I feel like it will make more sense as the series continues. There is political intrigue and it is action packed. The romance is perfect - slow burn but in the best possible way. I am in love with both Tissanah and Max. They are equally amazing.
The narration was good but I would say I’m not a huge fan of the male voice. He’s fine, but not who I would have chosen. In fact I prefer the female narrators voice for Max over the male voice actor to be honest. He just seems too rushed and breathy?
Despite that, I cannot wait to get to book 2!

Not a fan of the narrators

I’m likely going to read the rest of the series instead of listen.Because I had a hard time with the narrators. I wanted to know what happens, so I pushed through to finish- but man it was painful at times!
The voice for Reshaye was so annoying! & the parts with Tisaanah struggling to learn a new language, I just could not stand it. Overall enjoy the story, but it would have been more enjoyable if I read it.

Read it

The story was good, however I couldn't finish it. As soon as the male narrator started I lost it. He was too much and all I could think was "DUDE, calm down!". I was out of breath for him and he overwhelmed me sooo much it was unbearable. He sounded surprised by every sentence he said and like he was on a rush. I wish I could've powered through his narration and finish it. Maybe I'll read it instead eventually.

Love the book not keen on narration

I really love this story however I will be physically reading books 2 and 3 because of the narration. The narrator was by no means bad, she is very talented, however I didn’t like the voices for the characters. For the first 30% I thought the main character was a young girl and her mentor was in his 80s and then I read sone reviews and realized that this is a romance story. I fully think this is just my perception and that many people will still enjoy the narration however it really threw me out of the story in a few instances.

Loved the story

I loved the story and the female narrator. It was immersive, fast-paced and exciting. But the male narrator didn’t fit the role and sounded like he was gasping for breath the entire time which was so distracting

Great story

Fantastic story line, gripped me from the beginning. I picked it because it was included in my membership, but bought the next book right after. Male voice actor was not very good. Super breathy in a distracting way and flat unemotional delivery compared to the female narrator.
