About this listen

In a nation on the brink of war, a young art student's star-crossed love begins to bloom in the first book of the New York Times best-selling epic fantasy trilogy by award-winning author Laini Taylor.

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages—not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

When one of the strangers—beautiful, haunted Akiva—fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

Interesting story

I really liked this story though it was a little too PG13 for me as I prefer more 18A stuff but besides that part the actual storyline was really good. Narrator was also great.

loved it!

The first time I read this book a few years back I devoured the entire series back to back, now I'm listening to the audio and it's even better. Beautiful, unique characters, great plot and story all blended. It has all my favourite elements, romance, fantasy, magic and action.
The descriptions were outstanding.

Very beautiful but only romance

The whole point of the book was to describe how amazingly beautiful all characters are and how madly they are in love with each other from the first sight. It is not the bad thing, it’s just that at least in this part all other pieces of story and the whole world building feels secondary and unimportant, just a background to the emotional relationship of the main couple. Which is sad for me, as the idea of this world is interesting. I’d love to read the same book but with the focus on the world and not the sweet sweet extremely sweet endless descriptions of their “love”

More mush then story

I feel like there could be a really interesting story here, fun Romeo and Juliet with a twist. However in 12 hours of listing there was maybe 2 of actual story, the rest was just love struck tween mushiness. Well written I think, had some (although very little) witty interactions. But I personally can’t listen to someone talk about how pretty her boyfriend is for 4 hours straight, no matter how good the story could potentially be. I won’t say this was a bad book, if you can handle 12 hours of “no I love you more” this is the book for you! I think though I will definitely pass on the rest of the series.
