I think the concept of the story is compelling, but the actual writing, character development, dialogue, chapter titles, and ending could use quite a bit of refinement. I also feel that if I had read this book instead of listening to it, I may have enjoyed it. The narrator was terrible, unfortunately, and it made this book difficult to listen to (but I had to know how it ended!). There was little, if any, changes in tone, tempo, inflection, emotion, and in the voices of the characters throughout the entire story. This made it a bit unclear at times who was speaking, what sentences were questions and which ones were statements, and even when a sentence ended.
Might try Leslie Wolfe again, but only if the narration isn't done by the same person.

This Leslie Wolfe story about a PTSD-suffering FBI Agent called in to help with a "posed" kidnap/torture-rape victim in Florida turns into a search for a probable Serial Killer and a race-against-time rescue tale. Agent 'Tess Winnet' leads local police, the Medical Examiner, and readers through a well-researched almost step-by-step investigation (including database searches, Victimology discussions, and Profiling techniques of better-than-Hollywood quality). Factoring in an interesting backstory with Winnet's rape during her time as a Quantico Recruit and guilt over the murder of a well-loved partner.. and I was impressed. The attention to authenticity slips a bit when they do things like formally interview witnesses in groups, unfortunately (that never happens).. but I enjoyed this one.

As to presentation: reader Todd Waites is an "average" narrator at best. His diction/timbre/cadence and pacing are legitimately professional.. but his voice-acting - particularly female characters - is sometimes questionable and his tone often betrays an "I am reading a text sitting open in my lap" indifference. Italics Publishing Inc. could have cast this project better.

Altogether, 'Dawn Girl' merits 7.5 stars out of 10. You could certainly do better with a typical episode of 'NCIS' or 'Profiler' (or any number of other options if they ask for your Credit).. but this one is a reasonable distraction off of the 'Plus' menu if you find it there.
