Publisher's Summary

When a high-ranking officer gallops into the quiet Mistyvales, he brings a warning that shakes the countryfolk to their roots. But for Aedan, a scruffy young adventurer with veins full of fire and a head full of ideas, this officer is not what he seems. The events that follow propel Aedan on a journey that only the foolhardy or desperate would risk, leading him to the gates of the nation's royal academy - a whole world of secrets in itself.

But this is only the beginning of his discoveries. Something is stirring in the land, something more ominous than the rising threat of hostile nations. Fearful travelers whisper of an ancient power breathing over Thirna, changing it, waking it. In the very heart of these stirrings, Aedan encounters that which defies belief, leaving him speechless with terror - and wonder.

Once I got into it, I couldn't stop!

I DID have a bit of a time starting it, though, and I can't put my finger on why. I'm an avid reader, and I go through a lot of audiobooks, and once I did get into this one, I was more than happy.
Everything from the characters to the narration satisfied the fantasy geek in me, and I really like that the main character is an early teen...it makes a lot of his motivations very relatable (despite not being close to my teens anymore, lol).
I will say (and it may just be me), if you're not focused on listening, it's easy to get lost, and I found myself hitting the <30sec button a lot. It's hard to describe, except just like real books, some you have to give more attention when reading.

I'm eagerly awaiting the next in what I hope to be a lengthy series!

Slow and unnecessary

This book could be 15 hours rather than 30. Much of it is slow and unnecessary which makes it boring.

Tedious mediocrity.

The main character may have been relatable for a 13 year old but I certainly would not have been among that number. Despite him constantly being praised for his tactical genius and touted as being smart and clever he constantly falls dismally short of intelligent thought. In addition he is constantly doing brave and reckless things only to freeze and show none of that same bravery or young recklessness when it actually would help. All in all I found him to be a very contrary and frustrating character that I wanted to like early on but after 20+ hours of no discernible growth grew frustrated and tired of him.

I very much hoped to enjoy this book, so I'm disappointed that after listening to most of it there's been no real progress. Not sure why there's so many positive reviews maybe it's just because the fantastic Tim Gerard Reynolds was able to keep most people overlooking the awful storytelling.

This is the first time I've bothered to write a review, and I've only taken the time to do so because I feel that the ratings on this book are horribly incorrect and that unless people want to listen to 30+ hours of Tim Gerard Reynolds and not care about what they should avoid this book.

weak world

so tired of fantasy books where everyone is an ignorant snobby douch. I can understand a few characters to create conflict or mirror every day life. But it's so frustrating when u have to sit thru 15 to 20 chapters of spiteful bs and the cowardly main character just eats it up. why would the author want his readers to spend half the time gritting their teeth in frustration? Cant imagine that makes for a good experience.

A MASTERPIECE

One of the best books ive ever listened too. This is a instant classic, and ranks up there with Name of the Wind. At the writing of this review its been FIVE YEARS since this book came out. I will be personally trying to contact the author to BEG for a update or new release.

Wow

I just listened to pure art.

Wonderful!!

I honestly hesitated in the beginning because it started off really slow, but I realize now how necessary it was to build that foundational background to enrich the story further! So maybe valuable lessons in this book and the best part is that it's taught to us by a child/teenager. I was hoping to start book 2 but it's not out yet :(. As always, I'm never disappointed in Tim Gerard Reynolds' narration skills! This is is the 2 series that I choose based on him and I'm very pleased.

Coming of age fantasy...a very long coming of age

I enjoyed this book, however I become evermore frustrated by the slow pace. Not for the impatient. The protagonist takes an age to overcome crippling issues.

Despite these issues this book has laid the foundation for something special.
