About this listen
From Sebastian Barry, a two-time finalist for the Man Booker Prize, comes a powerful and unforgettable novel chronicling a young Irish immigrant's army years in the Indian wars and the American Civil War.
Thomas McNulty, having fled the Great Famine in Ireland and now barely 17 years old, signs up for the US Army in the 1850s and with his brother in arms, John Cole, goes to fight in the Indian Wars - against the Sioux and the Yurok - and, ultimately, in the Civil War. Orphans of terrible hardships themselves, they find these days to be vivid and alive, despite the horrors they see and are complicit in.
Moving from the plains of Wyoming to Tennessee, Sebastian Barry's latest work is a masterpiece of atmosphere and language. An intensely poignant story of two men and the makeshift family they create with a young Sioux girl, Winona, Days Without End is a fresh and haunting portrait of the most fateful years in American history and is a novel never to be forgotten.

History, locality, and love
What a fabulous book. I learned so much about early America and the raw grit it took to survive. I wasn’t sure this book was for me but I am so glad that I decided to listen. Well worth the read.

The words just fill you
This is a wonderful experience, tears of laughter, painfully true. An intense reliving of a time in our history. Good men, men fully in life sorting through loyalty and love and cruel orders followed.
I love this man Sebastian Barry, his words sing true. Feel this time in our country and feel the shame of our actions.

Fantastic book and narration
I’ve never read any Sebastian Barry and don’t usually enjoy tales of the Wild West or civil war, but the narrator’s take on events/life/people is at once touching, tender, funny, hard...just a wonderful mix of juxtapositions that ‘work’. Aidan Kelly is the perfect narrator for this book. This is one of my all time faves through audible.

Sebastian Barry is so eloquent that his writing can make you gasp. This story of a young Irishman in 19th century America Is both engaging and important. The narrator’s performance is excellent.

Great performance and authentic prose!
So much wisdom portrayed in Tom McNulty’s character. It flowed beautifully throughout the story. A sad tale of how things were during that time but the joy of relationships Shawn through.
