Publisher's Summary

A heartfelt and inspiring memoir and celebration of Deaf culture by Nyle DiMarco, actor, producer, two-time reality show winner, and cultural icon of the international Deaf community

Before becoming the actor, producer, advocate, and model that people know today, Nyle DiMarco was half of a pair of Deaf twins born to a multi-generational Deaf family in Queens, New York. At the hospital one day after he was born, Nyle “failed” his first test—a hearing test—to the joy and excitement of his parents.

In this engrossing memoir, Nyle shares stories, both heartbreaking and humorous, of what it means to navigate a world built for hearing people. From growing up in a rough-and-tumble childhood in Queens with his big and loving Italian-American family to where he is now, Nyle has always been driven to explore beyond the boundaries given him. A college math major and athlete at Gallaudet—the famed university for the Deaf in Washington, DC—Nyle was drawn as a young man to acting, and dove headfirst into the reality show competitions America’s Next Top Model and Dancing with the Stars—ultimately winning both competitions.

Deaf Utopia is more than a memoir, it is a cultural anthem—a proud and defiant song of Deaf culture and a love letter to American Sign Language, Nyle’s primary language. Through his stories and those of his Deaf brothers, parents, and grandparents, Nyle opens many windows into the Deaf experience.

Deaf Utopia is intimate, suspenseful, hilarious, eye-opening, and smart—both a memoir and a celebration of what makes Deaf culture unique and beautiful.

A must-read autobiography

It was a bizarre experience to listen to a Deaf author rather than read their words or watch a ASL text. I was really impressed by the reader’s voice and his ability to capture DiMarco’s words in an audible format. Kudos to Mr. Bittner.

Mr. DiMarco’s autobiography beautifully wove his personal experiences with those of the broader Deaf community and culture. His pride and passion of all aspects of his identity is palpable but never boasting- his ability to tell his story leaves the reader celebrating his successes and sharing his pain as he shares the highs and lows of his own life along with those of the Deaf and LGBTQ+ communities.

I am humbled by his ability to be vulnerable through the retelling of his early life, his discovery of his sexual identity, and the trials and tribulations of his professional life as a young Deaf man.

His story is poignant and reflective of the human condition. He is thoughtful, compassionate, accepting, whilst encouraging himself and others to consider their biases, preconceived notions and our approach to “the other”. If we all took as much thought in our interactions as Mr. DiMarco does, the world would be a much more progressive, peaceful and equitable place.

Thank you for such a wonderful addition to the Audible collection. If this is a reflection of what this young man has achieved by the age of 33, I look forward to another memoir when he is 66.

Laurie

Insight into Deafness

Well-written and ably read, Deaf Utopia gives insight into Deaf Culture to those who are unfamiliar with it. Nyle shares touching stories from his childhood and more recent past, allowing all to better understand him and his background. For those unfamiliar with cultural Deafness, Deaf Utopia is a wealth of knowledge. Highly recommended listen, I would love to see this book offered in visual format, too.
