Publisher's Summary

Why are we the way we are? Who can we become? What stands in our way?

In Dealing with the Devil, Tony Schwartz investigates these sweeping questions by fiercely reckoning with his own life choices, regrets, and aspirations. He confronts the shame that arose after he helped craft a persona for Donald Trump in The Art of the Deal that 30 years later aided in his election as president. He provides a window into understanding our complicated relationship with Trump, and the Trump in each of us. Finally, Schwartz explores how the experience of writing The Art of the Deal prompted him to take an entirely different path in his life.

This path led Schwartz to a lifelong exploration of the factors that shape our beliefs and identity, the influence of our early caregivers, and the ways that we can heal and grow by accepting and acknowledging both the best and the worst in ourselves. Schwartz’s story is defined not by his time with Trump, but rather by his lifelong quest to become a better human being - as a husband, a father, a grandfather and as the CEO of a company devoted to helping others more skillfully and wisely manage their lives.

A heartfelt story of a life lived with regrets.

This journey through another man's regrets and painful mistake helped me to understand my own better. I will be listening to this again, there are more lessons to be learned, I'm sure if it.

Kind of all over the map, but all of it interesting

This book at times seems disjointed, and it feels like he threw in the “Trump card” to sell more books (and we have already heard most of what he has to say about Donald Trump)…. Anyway, the ploy must have worked because the Trump angle was what primarily interested me and led to my purchase. However, it was the rest of the content that turned out to be most interesting in the end - especially some of the pop psych work on Energy Project, etc. I expected this book to be ok, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

Very informative

While I started this book because thinking it might provide insight into the “orange menace”, it proved to be informative in a much broader sense. Although not the target audience, tRump supporters, if they ever felt inclined to learn anything, would gain immensely from this book - even if they discounted the sections that referenced the aspiring dictator.

if this was a self-help book, I'd give it 5 stars.

if this was a self-help book, I'd give it 5 stars. But that's not what I signed up for. This book was incoherent, rambling, messy, and all over the place.
