Publisher's Summary

The newspapers called us the Seven Wonders. We were a group of friends, that’s all, and then Toby died. Was killed. Murdered.

1905. A decade after the grisly murder of Oxford student Toby Feynsham, the case remains hauntingly unsolved. For Jeremy Kite, the crime not only stole his best friend, it destroyed his whole life. When an anonymous letter lands on his desk, accusing him of having killed Toby, Jem becomes obsessed with finally uncovering the truth.

Jem begins to track down the people who were there the night Toby died – a close circle of friends once known as the ‘Seven Wonders’ for their charm and talent – only to find them as tormented and broken as himself. All of them knew and loved Toby at Oxford. Could one of them really be his killer?

As Jem grows closer to uncovering what happened that night, his pursuer grows bolder, making increasingly terrifying attempts to silence him for good. Will exposing Toby's killer put to rest the shadows that have darkened Jem’s life for so long? Or will the gruesome truth only put him in more danger?

Some secrets are better left buried…

From the bestselling, acclaimed author of The Magpie Lord and The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen comes a chilling historical mystery with a sting in the tail. You won’t be able to put this gripping story down!

Great characters, great narrator

I was so impressed with this book. The story is compelling. The characters are rich, and I really enjoyed the dual timeline showing what was going on 10 years ago versus now. The whole book ended up being very satisfying. The narrator also does a fabulous job. I usually listen to audiobooks at 1.2x speed because usually the narration is too slow for me, but in this case, I didn’t want to speed it up. I was enjoying the distinction between character voices and Nicky’s drawl wouldn’t have sounded right at a higher speed. The narrator added to my enjoyment on this one.

An unusual and touching mystery

Well acted, well written mystery that I know I'll return to again and again. It's a comforting listen despite the at-times heavy plot.

A genre in itself

The old vocabulary combined with British accent was sometimes difficult to understand. Also there were too many characters and I sometimes got confused. A chance it got more simple in the last chapters with only the main characters in action. Definitely not the best novel I read but still was enjoyable.

LOL: don’t really want to write out a whole review, just the one line above. But, have to, so I’m writing this to fill up space ;-)

Same classic flavour minus the spice

This is an excellent book and a great example of KJ’s writing!

For anyone returning to her work it’s worth knowing that this particular KJCharles book doesn’t have any explicit scenes (or rather it starts and cuts out like in a tv show).

It’s focused on the unfolding murder mystery as the main course of the story rather than being one of her more romance focused stories / that being said, there is still strong elements of chosen family and queer historical fiction (for which I adore KJ’s work).

KJ’s work has always been best for her ability to write compelling characters in a clever and well researched historical setting… however one of my favourite elements of her work has always been the balance of these elements PLUS the in depth depictions of healthy queer love, affection, and indeed, sex.
That being said, this is newly one of my favourites of her books.

As for the performance of this book, I am incredibly picky about the capabilities/sound of all audio performances and this one has been refreshingly well done!
There were only one or two moments when it took a second to work out who was talking as the distinction between character voices is overall done very well.

A surprisingly good listen!

This was an audible suggested read and it was on sale so I purchased it.
It took me a few chapters to get into but once I did, I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I thought the handling of topics like same sex relationships, abortion and SA were presented very well, especially given the time period. I’m not sure I can agree with the ending, but I remind myself it’s a work of fiction.
I’m now off to find more titles by this author!

thrilling murder mystery

the plot and setting were amazing! i didn’t go to oxford, but i did go to its closest canadian equivalent - gowns, latin prayers and all! really took me back except there was significantly less murder. kj may claim this isn’t a romance but i could also argue there’s as much romance in this as there is in many of her books; it’s just wrapped in a murder mystery like the romance in the secret life of country gentlemen is wrapped in smuggling/treasure hunting. highly recommended!
