Nechama Tec reconstructs the amazing details of how these men and women of all ages - hungry, largely unarmed, and exposed to harsh winter weather - managed not only to survive but to take on the dual role of fighters and rescuers. Under the guidance of their charismatic leader, Tuvia Bielski, they smuggled Jews out of heavily guarded ghettos, led retaliatory raids against Nazi collaborators, and offered protection to all Jewish fugitives who could find their way to them.

I have always wondered why there was not more resistance by the Jews. Seeing my fellow Countrymen walking passively toward the Death Camps really confused me.
Why confused? Many of the men & women had FOUGHT during WWI and won medals for courage. These people were WARRIORS, not Conscientious Objectors. They had not gone passively toward death, they fought and won the RIGHT TO LIVE. Where were these poeple?

They did fight! They carried their children and food and worked towards gaining weapons and safety. They lived in the huge forests in the country Belarusse for almost 3 years. There were hundreds of these groups all through the conquered countries the Third Reich felt they could claim as theirs. They too were wrong. DEFIANCE is that story.
Please listen to the courage used just to try and live. This is the truth that refutes another NAZI LIE - Jews don't fight! They did fight; they did die; and they did win! It is an amazing story.

I am amazed there are no reviews on this audible book yet. This is an amazing story with an excellent narrator. it is literally captivating what this man accomplished during World War II. A Jew saving over a thousand Jews
making a community in the forest.
