About this listen

Star Wars: The High Republic, the New York Times best-selling series, continues. . . .

For light and life! One year after the fall of Starlight Beacon, the galaxy is in chaos. An anarchistic group known as the Nihil has taken over a section of space now known as the Occlusion Zone. Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh and scientist Avon Starros team up in an attempt to find a way through the Nihil Stormwall to save those on the other side. But what are the Nihil’s real plans? And what of the nameless creatures that can destroy the Jedi Order?

The battle has just begun. . . .

Could have been better

Gratton's & Ireland's combined writing style I would describe as mentally unchallenging, and the voice over artist really couldn't commit to the voices they chose for the characters, or even really differentiating most of them. If you're a young woman in this book, there's one stock standard voice you get, which is really confusing to listen to when the author hasn't specified who's speaking. Overall, I really could have skipped this book. It's primary function seems to be to give context to the book that follows.

Wokeness

Please leave all the wokeness out of Star wars, it add nothing to the story…

Hard to get through

The story takes a backseat to unorthodox politics and detailed descriptions of unorthodox sexual orientations and uncharacteristic emotional instability. You'll get a snippet of plot for every 5 minutes of excruciating descriptions of makeup haircuts perfume, yearning for characters not introduced, and so on. When the story is described, it's often just described almost as an afterthought. There's very little world building; just namedropping. You'll find yourself cringing and activating the fast forward feature more often than not. For all the work making the characters as unpredictable and unrelatable as possible, the story is very predictable.

The performance is passable but unremarkable. There's little attempt to capture the emotion or provide different voices for characters. It pales in comparison to performances like Marc Thompson's.
