About this listen

REESE'S BOOK CLUB MAY 2023 PICK

A multigenerational saga that traverses the glamour of old Hollywood and the seductive draw of modern-day showbiz

When Kitty Karr Tate, a White icon of the silver screen, dies and bequeaths her multimillion-dollar estate to the St. John sisters, three young, wealthy Black women, it prompts questions. Lots of questions.

A celebrity in her own right, Elise St. John would rather focus on sorting out Kitty’s affairs than deal with the press. But what she discovers in one of Kitty’s journals rocks her world harder than any other brewing scandal could—and between a cheating fiancé and the fallout from a controversial social media post, there are plenty.

The truth behind Kitty's ascent to stardom from her beginnings in the segregated South threatens to expose a web of unexpected family ties, debts owed, and debatable crimes that could, with one pull, unravel the all-American fabric of the St. John sisters and those closest to them.

As Elise digs deeper into Kitty's past, she must also turn the lens upon herself, confronting the gifts and burdens of her own choices and the power that the secrets of the dead hold over the living. Did You Hear About Kitty Karr? is a sprawling thriller set against the backdrop of the Hollywood machine, an insightful and nuanced look at the inheritances of family, race, and gender—and the choices some women make to break free of them.

Great Story

I enjoyed one narrator more than the other but for the contrast ok. It did not ruin the book like others have suggested

Mediocre performances - read the book instead!

I do NOT recommend this audiobook. I persevered with listening, but only because I had heard such good things about the novel AND I am recovering from surgery and don't have much else to do. Would have given 2.5 stars if I could - rounded up out of generosity.

Elise's reader was terrible - mispronouncing words (common to many audiobooks), but much worse, pausing in all the wrong places to the point where I had to rewind frequently to understand the point of the sentences - was it meant to be a pause? a comma? the end of a sentence? or had she just run out of breath? It was almost as if she didn't understand what she was reading in places, that's how poorly she read.

The other 2 readers were ok - only okay, but compared to Elise, seemed like award winning voice actors.

The story really lost out because of the poor performance of Elise; I am going to have to actually read the book to evaluate its quality - impossible to do while listening to this audiobook.

Story is good but performances made it hard to listen

Really good story but I wish I had read the book instead. Still worth the listen.

Disappointed

I was so excited to listen to this book. The reviews were great and it was recommended in a cpl of book clubs. But I was disappointed with the sorry and the performance. I thought it would be a good romance/life story. But at some points it felt preachy and too political for an “easy read”. Maybe reading the book would have been better. I fast forward through a lot of this.

Really didn’t like the performances

I was excited for this book, but ended up very disappointed. The story is okay, but the performances ruined it for me. I’ve been listening to audio books for years and this was the FIRST time I ever felt as though I didn’t know which character was speaking. Elise’s voice in particular caused me to replay conversations over and over to determine who was saying what. In a word, I found this audio book frustrating.
