Long-listed, Barnes and Noble Best New Books of the Year 2023

"This captivating production will leave listeners wanting more."—AudioFile

When two young rival journalists find love through a magical connection, they must face the depths of hell, in a war among gods, to seal their fate forever.

After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again. But eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow just wants to hold her family together. Her mother is suffering from addiction and her brother is missing from the front lines. Her best bet is to win the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.

To combat her worries, Iris writes letters to her brother and slips them beneath her wardrobe door, where they vanish—into the hands of Roman Kitt, her cold and handsome rival at the paper. When he anonymously writes Iris back, the two of them forge a connection that will follow Iris all the way to the front lines of battle: for her brother, the fate of mankind, and love.

Shadow and Bone meets Lore in Rebecca Ross's Divine Rivals, an epic enemies-to-lovers fantasy novel filled with hope and heartbreak, and the unparalleled power of love.

What the critics say

"An ardent romance and a harrowing exploration of war’s horrors and heartbreaks... with inventive worldbuilding, nuanced characterizations, and prose by turns dreamy and atmospherically tense."—Publishers Weekly

“Rich and romantic—if stories had scent, this one would smell like a mug of black tea, the ink ribbons of a typewriter, and that addictive spice called enemies to lovers.”—Shelby Mahurin, New York Times bestselling author of Serpent & Dove

"A sweeping start to a beautiful and romantic new series. Ross weaves her stories in such a vulnerable and delicate way, truly with a style all her own. I adored this book."—Adalyn Grace, New York Times bestselling author of Belladonna

I wish I could give it 6 stars!

From the first chapter I was hooked! Listened to it any chance I got till I finished it!! The plot line the twists and the ending oh my goodness!! I even got my sisters into it haha! Divine Rivals was my first fantasy book and I don’t think I will be able to find one that lives up the this one!! Can’t wait for the second book to come out!! LOVE IT!

“You’ve got mail” if it was YA and boring

I picked this up because of all the amazing reviews it has. I was honestly quite bored. The plot was slow and predictable and very little effort was put into the fantasy element of the book. It would have made more sense as a WWI historical romance where they just so happened to have magical typewriters. The world building was weak and it read very British in terminology and behaviours, but then kept mentioning baseball which was weird.

Great characters in this book

obviously my favorite is Iris ...she is sucha strong individual and I love how she never gives up and keeps going even if the outcomes isn't what she hoped for or expected. Even when afraid she keeps going.

Great story, Hungry for More

I really enjoyed this story, but in a way it has me so divided. The beautiful rivalry, the magical connection between them, the way they find themselves drawn to each other… I loved their love, their longing, and their individuality separate of each other… and then, in a way the plot twists and turns in the end, and it’s like all the attachments to these characters is being tested and pulled to and fro, and it’s like the next book began, dragging us into this unknown, feeling al the feels… and then it stops. We must wait. We must wait to see what the fate of Kit and Winnow, and all that has just happened… or at least those of us waiting for the second book must wait… if you are fortunate enough to discover this beautiful story after Ruthless Vows is released, you will be able- and will want to- dive straight in.

Kind of Boring

The narrator is fantastic.
The story is quite simple and boring. Not much happens outside of the MC's relationship. It's like the war and background events are just filler.
Not going to buy the next book.

Mesmerizing Story

I absolutely loved this book and its narration. I liked both main characters, flaws and all, appreciated the pace of the story, and loved the slightly odd magic system. The narrators are perfect for their roles and pulled me further into the story. My only criticism is that the volume level of the recording seems to be inconsistent at times, which is a little distracting, but not enough to take away from my enjoyment of it.

Easy listening, good narration and good story

I’m glad I gave this one a chance. Feels like historical fantasy fiction... The romance is soft and sweet. I wouldn’t call this book steamy or bold. It’s an easy listen. I’ll definitely check out the second instalment.

Good read a bit slow.

I liked the concept, found it a bit slow. The second book might be a bit more action. I don’t like the narrators voice at first but I grew to really like it as the book went on.
