About this listen

‘You and I are going to have a chat. If you hang up, this girl dies.’

Adam Turner works the mid-dawn shift at his local radio station. From 12am to 6am, it’s his job to fill the airtime with old songs, inane chatter, and the occasional talkback caller. It’s a long way from his prime-time slot from over a decade ago, when he was a star in the making. Now there’s no producers, no billboards, no stakes, and, crucially, not many listeners. His frequent callers are drunk college students headed home from a night out, or long-range truck drivers. He is completely alone in the studio from midnight until dawn every night.

And then one night at 12:45am, he gets a different kind of call, with higher stakes than he could ever have wanted. The caller’s rules are simple – stay on the line, live on air, until dawn, or the woman they are holding captive will die.

The night wears on and Adam is tormented by his caller, forced to answer increasingly personal questions, exposing his fall from grace for all to hear. He must try to figure out just who is calling him, what they really want, and how he can stop them. All while staying live on air, and keeping the psycho talking.

But as the conversation gets deeper, is Adam willing to broadcast his darkest secrets to the world in order to keep a stranger safe?

Great quick listen!

I liked the performances in this book- very cool that it’s a radio host and they add audio effects to make it seem like a host and a guest on the station. Story was somewhat predictable and lacked a little depth. Told my husband what the premise was about 30 mins in and he was able to guess. Very enjoyable overall, despite some predictability. Quick mystery and fun to listen to on a long drive!

Wow

Fast, short, and beautifully performed. I had sympathized with Adam at the beginning, and at some point I thought he would eat his gun…. The narrator Luke nailed it .

A breakneck speed listen

𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐢𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞.”

I adore Benjamin Stevenson - his Ernest Cunningham series is clever and fun. I was excited to see that he has two Audible Original shorts, with this being the second one I listened to.

Stevenson once again plays with the locked room mystery and gives it a modern take, this time focusing on a radio host working his mid-dawn shift at a local station when a caller tells him to stay on the line, live on air, until dawn, or the woman he is holding captive will die; there is only a mild connection to the outside world, such as the texting line from listeners, keeping the feeling of isolation. The production on this story is excellent, with effects like a truck engine running, a sound of a gunshot, and the not-as-clear caller voice, making it exactly like listening to the radio. This not only makes it feel incredibly immersive, but also harkens back to a 1940s suspense radio play. Luke Arnold is a superb narrator, helping keep me on the edge of my seat (especially during that coffee spilling scene), and having me teetering between empathy and virulence for Adam. He’s overall pretty selfish, yet you can’t help but desperately want to know what is going to happen, especially with Stevenson’s well placed reveals and its Hitchcockian-style ending.

Don’t Hang Up is a story of isolation, truth, revenge, and punishment. It is a breakneck-speed listen that has you doubting the truth all the way through.
