About this listen
New York Times best seller, six starred reviews
At once provocative, terrifying, and darkly subversive, Dread Nation is Justina Ireland's stunning vision of an America both foreign and familiar - a country on the brink, at the explosive crossroads where race, humanity, and survival meet.
Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania - derailing the War Between the States and changing the nation forever.
In this new America, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Education Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead.
But there are also opportunities - and Jane is studying to become an Attendant, trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do. It's a chance for a better life for Negro girls like Jane. After all, not even being the daughter of a wealthy white Southern woman could save her from society’s expectations.
But that’s not a life Jane wants. Almost finished with her education at Miss Preston's School of Combat in Baltimore, Jane is set on returning to her Kentucky home and doesn’t pay much mind to the politics of the eastern cities, with their talk of returning America to the glory of its days before the dead rose.
But when families around Baltimore County begin to go missing, Jane is caught in the middle of a conspiracy, one that finds her in a desperate fight for her life against some powerful enemies.
And the restless dead, it would seem, are the least of her problems.
"Abundant action, thoughtful world-building, and a brave, smart, and skillfully drawn cast entertain as Ireland illustrates the ignorance and immorality of racial discrimination and examines the relationship between equality and freedom." (Publishers Weekly, "An Anti-Racist Children's and YA Reading List")

"Narrator Bahni Turpin brings to life the barely restrained sarcasm of Jane McKeene, the bold heroine... Turpin's rendition of Jane's first-person voice illuminates her pluck, resilience, and wit.... Turpin moves easily between the emotions and accents of the many characters. She highlights the tension in the plot and clearly expresses the prejudices of some of the characters." (AudioFile)

Smart and Scary, just not how you'd expect...
One of the best zombie novels I've read in a long time! The plot device of a zombie apocalypse used to illustrate the stubborn prejudice faced by the masses, regardless of the larger issues that face them. The parallels in this story to what is being seen in the world today swept me away, delivered unerringly by the narrator. I will absolutely be looking for more books by this author (and more in the series??)

Bahni Turpin was an unbelievable narrator!
The story was charming, heart breaking and a wonderful spin in on a zombie apocalypse. Bahni Tupin's narration made me believe it was her story to tell and I would sit engrossed listening to the emotion in her voice! I'm off to read her next narration!

Zombie Killing Slaves!
This book was recommended in a podcast I regularly listen to, and it did not disappoint! The story was great; it's set in an alternate universe where slaves are trained to kill zombies! It features a strong female lead, who is intelligent, a revolutionary, and a skilled killer of zombies! She takes no shit from anyone, despite her 'station'.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the narration was excellent! The story focusses more on the 'zombie killing' part, and less on the slavery part - which is great for listeners who are sensitive to the atrocities of slavery. It kept me entertained and I finished the book quickly, listening to it in every spare moment! I highly recommend this audiobook! #Audible1

Boring
There was zero reason to finish this book. No plot, crappy characters. The only good thing about it was the voice acting.
