About this listen
A seaside retreat has just become a killer's favorite playground.
It's summer on the Jersey Shore. Children play on the beach. Husbands are off working in the city. And the surf echoes in the night. Here, in this perfect place, a serial killer has no worries in the world - except choosing the next victim.
Cam Hastings has come to Long Beach Island with her teenage daughter and the hope that maybe she can save her failed marriage. Cam has never stopped loving her husband, Mike, nor has she been able to outrun her flaws and demons - a vanished mother, a lost sister, and the ugly visions she has of missing children.
Now, Cam is about to step over the edge. For once, she will act on one of her visions - and then face the consequences. For a killer has just struck again. And for Cam, and the people she loves most, fear has come home for good.

Great listen
What a great listen. Great narrator as well. Plot twists are interesting as well and keep you guessing to near the end.. hopefully there is a sequel as either I missed something or somethings weren’t explained.

Struggles To Find A Balance
..between personality/relationship exposition and Mystery/Suspense. This book very much reminded me of Nora Roberts - with an attempt to describe realistic character development & romantic struggles while providing some Psychological Thriller elements. Wendy Corsi Staub's vocabulary & prose are impressive, her dialogue is outstanding, and she writes the most realistic 14-year-old girl I have ever read.. but despite a cleverly contrived psychopathic abductor, her protagonists's psychic visions are unrealistic (mentally commanding your subject - in the future - to "show me more" and having them do it is pretty implausible), and her pacing is notably off (the book moves far too slowly in the buildup to the climax).
I ascribe most of the problems with 'Dying Breath', however, to too much emphasis on character development relative to the child abduction plotline.
Emily Sutton-Smith turns in a professional reading performance. She reads too slowly (1.15X is the ideal playback speed), but her diction, timbre, cadence, and tone are commendable. After factoring in poor male character interpretations, however, I judge her narration "adequate".
Altogether, this enjoyable - if unspectacular - recording rates 7.5 stars out of 10. I am grateful to Audible for offering the book for free as part of the 'Plus' catalogue because I wouldn't have tried it otherwise.. and this audiobook would merit a Credit for afficianados of the Romance-Thriller crossover genre (I count myself as a fan of those - albeit not a devotee).
The book is good enough to tease a listen to Book Two of the 'Psychic Killer' series: it might flow better with established characters.

WOW!!!!!
I never say this, but I really hope this book will be part of a series. I absolutely loved every bit of it, both the story line and the narration. Well done and hope to hear more.

A bit tedious
too many words for the amount of story substance.
I was very disappointed after reading the reviews up at a 4.4 average.
Unfortunately, will not be carrying on with this author.

Very thrilling
Loved this book. The story was good though I had to fast forward a bit. A lot of unnecessary descriptions and filler words. The narration was good as well and drew you in. Great book and kept you in suspense the whole time.
But the story line was amazing and suspenseful.
I truly enjoyed this to the end. A great listen.

Enjoyed the story; will it lead to Book 2?
This novel, Dying Breath, written by Wendy Corsi Staub and deftly narrated by Emily Sutton-Smith, covers a lot of ground. I enjoyed the setting at the beach in summer. I was impressed by the 14 year old who I felt was very well developed as a character. I found the detective unrealistic in bringing lay people in to interview a victim's family in the hopes of sparking more psychic visions. But what do I know; I'm not a cop. I did enjoy the story, but the ending wrapped up quite quickly and left areas unexplored that I would like to have explored. If this story leads to a series with some of the same characters who will explore those areas, I'm in for Book 2!
