About this listen
Strong-willed and full of hope, Leo strives to learn more of the magic he has read so much about. He's heard of invisible links in his world, and hidden rifts to other realms filled with creatures and stones of power. But Leo's family is stuck in an impoverished city. He performs backbreaking farm work beside his older brother, a rebellious and cunning thief, but nonetheless a brother whom Leo would trust with his life. Their father takes care of them as best he can, but a dangerous secret has weighed heavily on him for years. He won't be able to keep it hidden much longer.
Leo believes everything will change for the better when he begins work as a bookbinder and finally leaves the dreadful farm. He can apply for apprenticeship to the Bookbinding Guild upon his soon-approaching birthday.
Everything will change, but in ways their family would never expect. It all begins when Leo's brother steals something that he should've left alone.

Slow pace, and hard to connect to main characters
The two main characters are children (10 and 13), with occasional chapters from an adult POV to fill in the world-building or to actually move the plot forward … which highlights the problem with main characters being so young. They have neither the knowledge nor the agency over their lives to drive any plot. Decisions are ultimately up to their parents, etc

Fantastic Book & Series
This had a nice balance between battles, the creation and building of each character, interaction between characters, and a fantastic plot. It co to use on at a perfect pace for listening. It always kept my attention and I found myself listening to each and every word.
I am hoping that another trilogy, spun off from this comes out.

good ending
It was a slower beginning but a good ending. The gentle rise of tention gives plenty of time for world and character building. The ending sets things up for the promise of an exciting second book.

Interesting world and magic system
It starts off slow but really brings you into the world. I particularly appreciate the way the city is organized with the farmer’s guild and the other smaller guilds. Great start to a fantasy trilogy

engaging read with a great narrator.
The plot kept me interested and the narator reads the characters amazingly. He is very expressive and it's easy to distinguish who is who.

sooooo boring
This story never gets to the good part. worst book by this author I've read/listen to. Never feels like the books exits out of that prologue mode so your constantly waiting for the story to pick up. When it kinda does in a very weak way as the good parts are glossed over the book ends. And the end has them basically right back where they started just short 1 person. I miss the fun and interesting setting found in his previous series. I get he wanted a dreary setting were the lower cast is used and abused but I can't see many ppl buy into a series this slow where nothing happens thru the entire book. The only points of interest are the summoning which u barely see and the king who's not what u expect. More time from his point of view would probably have saved the book if only to make things more interesting. But I the end its a slog fest with no reward.
