En América del Norte y Europa se celebra el año nuevo el 1 de enero. Pero en otras partes del mundo como ocurre en Asia siguen el calendario lunar-solar, por lo que la fecha varía cada año. Puede tener lugar entre el 21 de enero y el 20 de febrero con ciclos de 12 años, con un animal diferente representando cada año.

Nuestra historia nos lleva a un lejano lugar donde los animales han creado un sistema de equidad para gobernar su comunidad. En lugar de un rey, reina, primer ministro o presidente, tienen una familia que lidera al grupo durante todo un año lunar. El orden en el que estas familias de animales sirven a la comunidad fue determinado hace mucho tiempo por su amigo Buda, quien organizó una cena. Solo 12 animales acudieron a la cita y por esta razón sus años de celebración están ordenados según el momento en que los animales llegaron a la fiesta, desde el primero hasta el último. Así que cada 12 años, le toca liderar y servir a su comunidad a uno de ellos.
