En el invierno de 1945, en el Alto Egipto, un campesino árabe estaba recogiendo abono y tierra vegetal para sus cultivos. Mientras cavaba en la tierra blanda, encontró una gran vasija de barro. En su interior había pergaminos que contenían libros hasta entonces inéditos.
Según la tradición local, el padre del chico había sido asesinado recientemente y el muchacho se preparaba para perseguir al hombre que había asesinado a su padre.
Los pergaminos fueron descubiertos cerca del emplazamiento de la antigua ciudad de Chenoboskion, en la base de una montaña llamada Gebel et-Tarif, cerca de Hamra-Dum, en los alrededores de Naj 'Hammadi, a unos sesenta kilómetros de Luxor, en Egipto. Los textos estaban escritos en lengua copta y se conservaban en hojas de papiro. El estilo de la letra data del siglo III o IV d.C. El Evangelio de Tomás es el más largo de los volúmenes, con 114 versos. Estudios recientes indican que la obra original de Tomás, de la que los rollos son copias, puede ser anterior a los cuatro evangelios canónicos de Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan. Actualmente se cree que el origen del Evangelio de Tomás es del siglo I o II d.C.
