About this listen
1969. A brutal murder in an all black town and a pregnant 13-year-old girl at the center of it all. Years later, the girl - now a woman of 49 - struggles with the weight of guilt and what appears to be the presence of the man who was murdered.
The guilt with which Ella struggles affects those around her: her son, now a troubled man of 36, and the man she eventually marries, a prominent minister. But those are just a few of the people affected by Ella’s guilt. However, not only are the people around Ella impacted by her past actions, but they are, themselves, in conflict with their own pasts and matters of identity, which brings to light the various storylines of other characters in the story - all of which creates a world of complex characters and conflict that will immediately pull listeners into that same world. However, at the center of the story, the unsolved murder is the force that animates these characters until the end, when the shocking and unexpected truth of the murder is revealed.
