Publisher's Summary

Exclusively from Audible

Emma can be enjoyed as a charming love story, a detective story, and a comic and lively picture of English life 200 years ago.

Austen's beautiful, clever, wilful but fallible heroine Emma Woodhouse believes she knows best. Perfectly content with her life she sees no need for either love or marriage, yet nothing pleases her more than meddling in the romantic lives of others. But when she fails to heed the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and schemes to arrange a suitable match for her protégée, Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected. She discovers that she understands the feelings of others as little as she does her own heart.

With a cast of unforgettable characters, it is a lively comedy of manners that explores the concerns of genteel women living in Regency times.

Jane Austen was an English writer known primarily for her six major novels which focused on the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Her plots often explore women's dependence on marriage in the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security.

It’s was great

I enjoyed this story a lot, the reading was done beautifully and animatedly the characters are well written and they were very relatable. I find myself speaking similarly to the reader as I have spent so much time listening to this book.

My favourite Austen novel and a great audio book.

I can’t help but love Emma despite her flaws. This is my favourite Austen novel. I enjoy it more and more with each read (or listen)!

This is the one

I tried many versions from Audible. Jenny Agutter delivers a rich and layered unabridged performance of the novel. This is a reading true to the tone of the book. She has an ear for Austen's comedy. Mr. Woodhouse and Miss Bates alone place it above all the others. Audible, PLEASE produce versions of all of Austen at the same level. (Frances Barber's Mansfield Park is of the same quality).

Perhaps the best Jane Austen novel

I'm not sure if it's because I just listened to this one, but I think it's my favourite of Austen's novels (I have yet to read Mansfield Park though). Nothing I say can do justice to her genius, although I think Jenny Agutter's narration comes close.

Jenny Agutter’s velvety voice

What a lovely way to be drawn into Jane Austen’s world by Ms. Agutter’s reading. That voice if only she did more books.

Not my most favorite Jane Austin novel

The reader got confusing with her character vocalizations as there were times I was unsure who was talking. The storyline improved towards the end.

Great narrator for this story!

I was a bit worried because I am quite picky about narration, but this narrator read in a consistent manner with the perfect amount of difference in characters! I love this book and it was great to find someone that could read it in a way that kept with the feel of the book.

Poor performance

I’ve listened to all of Jane Austen’s books on Audible. This is by far the most poor performance, poor enough that I had to return it.
There’s no shift in tone across voices, the narration is flat and all together too fast. Emma just didn’t come alive.
Rosamund Pike’s narrations are by far the best for Ms Austen’s books, Frances Barber is not far behind. The dramatised audible versions of Emma and Northanger aren’t bad either. They’re all wildly different narrations and they paint a different picture in ones minds eye. But none of them have felt quite as boring as this version.

Poor narration!

The pace, grating tone, and ill-advised pauses or lack thereof made the book difficult to understand. I constantly referred back to the book and reread passages, which completely defeated the purpose of an audiobook. Very poor performance. It's almost as if the narrator did not understand or like the book. I regret sticking it out for 11 chapters before purchasing another version.
