Publisher's Summary

The year was 1915. Equipment and food supplies were totally inadequate. After battling its way for six weeks through thousands of miles of pack ice and located only a day's sail from its destination, the Endurance became locked inside an island of ice. Yet Ernest Shackleton enabled all 27 of his men to survive for over a year on the ice-bound Antarctic seas - leadership without equal. This gripping account is based on contemporaneous diaries and interviews conducted by the author with these exceptional men.

An unbelievable story!

I absolutely loved this book! The narrator does a great job pulling experiences and various accounts to develop a cohesive story of this party's journey. I was blown away! The whole journey is a constant account of near death experiences, most of which are so hard to imagine, yet unbelievably real for Shackleton and his men. This is honestly such an incredible story of human survival and determination. I am left in awe.

On the Edge of my Seat

We all know what happened in the end. They made it. They came back alive. Yet, I was gripped every minute by this story. The deprivations, hardship, perpetual exhaustive demands upon the men's physical and psychological resources was incredible. Having been to Antarctica I had a sense of what the expedition would have encountered, so stepped out of my usual genres to try this title. Best book I've heard in many months. It kept me up til the wee hours and I'm still going on about it to friends. Highly recommend this book.

Engrossing Narrative

This relation of a near-disaster during an expedition to Antarctica is absolutely captivating. Alfred Lansing draws from planning/execution documents, ship manifests, memoirs, and actual interviews to construct a startlingly relatable tale about courage & force-of-will leadership (I can't help but contrast Ernest Shackleton's actions with those of Sir John Franklin 70 years earlier). The book is well-written, richly descriptive, and constructed nicely (yes, chronological - but with judicious cutaways & exceedingly human vignettes among the survivors - made up songs & poems, betting games, etc).

Reader Tim Pigot-Smith does the book justice with an outstanding narration, too. Mr. Pigot-Smith exhibits commendable diction, timbre, and cadence - but also a remarkably interested tone and well-thought-out voice-acting (avoiding accents when reading quotes, for example). Blackstone Audio Inc. pulled off a coup when they cast this project.

Altogether, 'Endurance' rates 9 stars out of 10. As an included selection with my Audible subscription, I feel incredibly fortunate to have stumbled on it.. because it would merit a Credit if they asked for one.
