About this listen

The biggest thriller of the year: A history-making eruption is about to destroy the Big Island of Hawaii. But a secret held for decades by the US military is far more terrifying than any volcano.

“The book is a classic summer beach read...Eruption will revive the art of speed-reading...told with a singular voice that is a compelling amalgam of the two writers.”—USA Today

Eruption is an epic thriller…fast-paced and deeply considered…a cinematic story rooted in science and infused with plenty of heart, tackling big themes like love and loss.”–Time

The master of the techno-blockbuster joins forces with the master of the modern thriller to create the most anticipated mega bestseller in years.

Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

“Red-hot storytelling... The action scenes will make readers’ eyes pop as the tension continues to build."–Kirkus, starred review

“Explosive…the summer’s ultimate literary mashup.”—Washington Post

"Takes readers on a thrilling journey."—BBC

"Beachbag-ready."—Boston Globe

“A seismic publishing event…all the elements of a summer blockbuster…it’s a thrill and the pages practically turn themselves.”—Associated Press

Eruption is this summer’s literary version of a blockbuster action movie.”–Los Angeles Times

"Breakneck and plausible."—Publishers Weekly

Interesting premise

Narration could have been better. Overly dramatic and ponderous. Great to see it got published.

Some good here, but felt unfinished.

The book felt like it was still in the planning or draft stages. There is some fun ideas and sequences here but it lacked the usual polish of a Crichton book. The book is strangely paced, and many of the characters lack depth. Hard to explain it succinctly but it just lacked the usual Crichton realism.

Ugh, Scott Brick is the real disaster of this book

I have no idea how the industry celebrates Scott Brick, he is absolutely the worst reader in the entire Audiobook world!!! Every line is horribly overacted and insincere to the point of being unlistenable. I bought this book based on the authors' credentials, thinking I might be able to tolerate the typical 'Scott Brick' reading. I am grateful Audible allows us to return books we can't get through. I slogged through 10 hours of this HORRIBLE reading... and then gave up. No matter how much I enjoyed the content, the reading just turned my stomach. He literally ruins every book he reads.

Overacted to the point of ludicrousness
Every line given some faked up emotion
Every character read the same way
Every emotion of every character read the same way, horrible, and over-acted

Years ago he did a good job of the Dune series, but something has gone horribly wrong with his readings since then.

Scott, TAKE AN ACTING CLASS, for your listener's sake!

Epic Disaster Read

Great summer read/listen. I felt some of the reviews were a little harsh. Interesting about how it came to be written. An epic disaster story, perhaps slightly a cautionary tale.

Too many syorylines

The narrators voice threw me off at the beginning. The very deep voice and military style narration didn't fit the beginning of the story as it was introducing civilian characters in a laid back environment. I did warm up to the voice and he was well suited for the intensity and characters but not until the middle of the story.
The story had too many threads and possibilities. It tried to encompass too many antagonistic situations with a sudden divined resolution which made the entire build up of the story all for nothing. I suppose that is Michael Creightons style though, nature always wins, but I was disappointed. And what I considered one of the main plot lines was explained away in a matter of minutes at the very end. This should have been a series.

Disappointing

I am a big fan of Crichton's books but was very disappointed by this one. It felt like the outline of a Crichton novel but was missing the things that made it one of his. Usually he has a proscience/tech antagonist who just sees the upside and not the risk and skeptical science based protagonist who understands the risk and is proven correct over the course of the story. They were missing from this book. The characters were poorly fleshed out. The narration was in the style of William Shatner, with odd emphasis and none of the characters had a unique voice. I can't recommend this book.

My least favourite

It wasn’t a great listen,
Narration was so so and the story never really got interesting
