Publisher's Summary

The Katha Upanishad embraces the key ideas of Indian mysticism in a mythic story we can all relate to – the quest of a young hero, Nachiketa, who ventures into the land of death in search of immortality.

But the insights of the Katha are scattered, hard to understand. Easwaran presents them systematically, and practically, as a way to explore deeper and deeper levels of personality, and to answer the age-old question, “Who am I?”

Easwaran grew up in India, learned Sanskrit from a young age, and became a professor of English literature before coming to the West. His translation of The Upanishads is the best-selling edition in English.

For students of philosophy and of Indian spirituality, and readers of wisdom literature everywhere, Easwaran’s interpretation of this classic helps us in our own quest into the meaning of our lives.

Best spiritual book I have read after 25 years of truth seeking

I discovered Hinduism after other wisdoms and I discovered this book after many others, including the Gita translated by the same author. I consider this book as number one amongst all. The text is extraordinary in its clarity and applicability in every day life and the audible production is wonderful to hear, I wish this book would become mandatory for everyone. To be read many times over.

From selfish to selfless.

If I ever doubted that timing is perfect I am in full belief now. For those on the path to something more, I can’t recommend the Essence if the Upanishads more. When you are ready.

Phenomenal

Brilliant content by an amazing narrator. Every part of it resonated with me. I cannot recognize recommend this book and all other Eknath Easwaran books more. Especially if they are being read by Paul Bazely.

Beautiful

This is indeed a beautiful summary of the essence for the Upanishads and a beautiful place to start enjoying the teaching of the Upanishads. The author is gifted in presenting these ancient teachings, which are timeless and ever relevant.

Quite good, although I expected more direct quotes from the Upanishads

While I liked how the author included many quotes from various saints, I was expecting more quotes from the Upanishads.

Some parts were rather slow and repetitive such that I wasn’t sure if I had inadvertently gone back to an earlier chapter.

That said, it was quite enjoyable and enlightening.
