About this listen
George Graham Vest was a US congressman during the Civil War and later a US senator, but perhaps much more notably, he was also a lawyer and skilled orator. It was in the capacity of the latter that he made his courtroom speech now known as "Eulogy of the Dog".
In 1870 in Warrensburg, Missouri, a well-known foxhound named Drum was shot during a hunting excursion. Drum’s owner sued the shooter for damages, and Vest made the courtroom address on behalf of the plaintiff. What followed was, not a recounting of testimonies and evidence as expected, but a historical, poetic, and philosophical ode to man’s best friend.
Not once did Vest refer to any aspect of the case, he merely crafted what was essentially a beautiful treatise on dogs and their loyalty and love for their humans and moved the jury to tears. The plaintiff won the case and, once you’ve experienced "Eulogy of the Dog", you’ll be in no doubts why.
