I loved this from start to finish! Fascinating world building, fast-paced with interesting relationships and high personal stakes, so many secrets! I want Polk to write about twenty more books set in this world!!

An amazing blend of tropes that works so, so well. the writing is captivating at every possible moment, and the voiceover performance was spectacular. Absolutely loved this one, bravo!!!

Chandler esque (but not his writing style thankfully) novel set in speakeasy Chicago, all the tropes, murder in darkened alley, reluctant PI, two many people getting involved in the investigation, but this is also a Romance with fantasy elements.

This was a book I picked up on a whim thanks to the concept, a gorgeous cover, and a friends recommendation, and I’m so glad I did. Not only was it well written and creative, it was very exciting and packed a lot into just a handful of pages. 

The story follows an occultist investigator as she takes on one last case before a curse steals her life. From there, she is drawn into a conspiracy and supernatural forces that could cost her all she holds dear. 

Helen is fantastic, exactly what a reader would want from a noir occultist, right down to the phrasing and mannerisms. She was a joy to follow and empathize with as she spends as much time as she can with her true love while making amends with her brother and the other strange characters she meets.

The romance feels sweet and natural, and suits the story so, so well. The plot is fast paced and honestly, there is never a dull moment. This novella feels epic in scope and could’ve been a full length novel, though I appreciated how tight the narrative was. The world building is inventive and while there are certain parts that are left to the readers imagination, I didn’t need to know every detail to understand what was going on. 

I recommend this to everyone who loves a good noir setting and vibe. It’s such a fun story that’s written with gorgeous prose and I’m so happy I picked up a copy.
