Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling author Timothy Keller shows how God calls each of us to express meaning and purpose through our work and careers.

In a work world that is increasingly competitive and insecure, people often have nagging questions: Why am I doing this work? Why is it so hard? And is there anything I can do about it?

Tim Keller, pastor of New York's Redeemer Presbyterian Church and New York Times best-selling author of The Reason for God, has taught and counseled students, young professionals, and senior leaders on the subject of work and calling for more than 20 years. Now he puts his insights into a book for listeners everywhere, giving biblical perspectives on such pressing questions as:

  • What is the purpose of work?
  • How can I find meaning and serve customers in a cutthroat, bottom-line-oriented workplace?
  • How can I use my skills in a vocation that has meaning and purpose?
  • Can I stay true to my values and still advance in my field?
  • How do I make the difficult choices that must be made in the course of a successful career?

With deep insight and often surprising advice, Keller explains that biblical wisdom is immensely relevant to our questions about our work. In fact, the Christian view of work - that we work to serve others, not ourselves - can provide the foundation of a thriving professional and balanced personal life. Keller shows how excellence, integrity, discipline, creativity, and passion in the workplace can help others and even be considered acts of worship - not just of self-interest.

Highly recommended

The author helped me to crytalize the meaning and purpose of work in words I could not find before. I was able to see how I can be impactful at work in ways that are simple and tangible. Now when I get frustrated about work - I ask myself how do I contributing to human flourishing under this situation. I bookmarked through out the book. Lots of take seats.

Great start. Tapers off toward the end

I loved the beginning of this book. Keller raises some heart searching problems someone might be struggling with in relation to their work. His use of some lesser known stories of Tolkein as illustrations really drive home his point.

I did find this book difficult to finish. I felt that he was trying to convince his readers that these principles work universally, but he was really mostly speaking to those in the corporate world. so, I didn't always feel that this book was terribly relevant for me. It was never bad, it just wasn't as engaging for the second half.

Work with Excellence

Timothy Keller gave me a new perspective on work. Rather than waiting for “my calling” to begin investing passionately, his view encourages me to see every job as valuable for the world God created. Now, rather than wasting more energy finding the “perfect” job, I can now pour that energy into the jobs I already have. We can worship God and show Him gratitude for our provision, our gifts, and our talents by doing any work in front of us with excellence. #Audible1
