About this listen

Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore had a lot in common: They sang together in the Methodist church choir, their daughters were best friends, and their husbands had good jobs working for technology companies in the North Dallas suburbs known as Silicon Prairie. But beneath the placid surface of their seemingly perfect lives, both women simmered with unspoken frustrations and unanswered desires.

On a hot summer day in 1980, the secret passions and jealousies that linked Candy and Betty exploded into murderous rage. What happened next is usually the stuff of fiction. But the bizarre and terrible act of violence that occurred in Betty's utility room that morning was all too real.

Based on exclusive interviews with the Montgomery and Gore families, Evidence of Love is the riveting account of a gruesome tragedy and the trial that made national headlines when the defendant entered the most unexpected of pleas: not guilty by reason of self-defense (Fort Worth Star-Telegram).

Adapted into the Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning television movie A Killing in a Small Town, this chilling tale of sin and savagery will "fascinate true crime aficionados" (Kirkus Reviews).

What the critics say

"An extraordinary book.... As compelling as the best fiction and as thorough as the best history." (Dallas Times Herald)

Editorial Review

From John Bloom and Jim Atkinson comes the true crime classic and New York Times bestseller, Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs. In 1980, Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore were best friends and confidants in Texas.

The two women were church-going Christians who sang in their church choir, their daughters were also best friends, and their husbands worked great jobs for technology companies in North Dallas, Texas. Beneath the perfectly groomed surface of their seemingly ideal lives lay a deep secret. What happened next sounds like a work of fiction, straight out of a horror story, but it is all too true. Only Candy was left alive to tell the tale.

Based on interviews with the Montgomery and Gore families, Evidence of Love is the riveting account of a gruesome true crime story and the trial that followed that made national headlines when Candy Montgomery entered a plea that shocked everyone: not guilty because of self-defence. Adapted into the Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning television film A Killing in a Small Town starring Barbara Hershey and an HBO miniseries starring Elizabeth Olson and Lily Rabe, this extraordinary title, available as an audiobook, is ideal for any true crime fan or those looking to dip their toes in the ever-expanding genre.

Story was good but lacking in areas

Number one issue the narrator was WAY too fast he was reading the book without even pausing between sentences. Too much useless back story about the characters lives growing up but not enough about the actual crime and trial
