About this listen

Evil Eye garnered an Audie Award for Original Work in 2020.

Usha is convinced that the Evil Eye, a curse that brings continuous misfortune, was cast upon her daughter, Pallavi, in the womb. What else could have possibly left her driven, career-oriented daughter edging closer and closer to 30 without a prospective husband? Determined to set Pallavi on the right path, Usha arranges date after date with potential suitors - but after yet another setup fails, it seems her efforts are proving fruitless. But in an unexpected turn of events, Pallavi becomes her own matchmaker when she meets - and quickly falls for - Sandeep, a young Indian-American entrepreneur. And though she expects her mother will be elated with her finally finding a man, Pallavi is distraught and confused to find her mother growing increasingly suspicious of Sandeep’s motives...and his true identity.

Told through a series of phone calls and voicemails, this Audible Original penned by award-winning rising star playwright Madhuri Shekar transitions seamlessly from a light-hearted family dramedy to an unexpectedly supernatural thriller. With an endearing cast of well-rounded characters, sharp, natural dialogue, and a shocking edge-of-your-seat climax, Evil Eye is a can’t-miss tale about cultural miscommunications, family secrets, and the lingering echoes of trauma.

Playwright Madhuri Shekar was awarded a commission through the Audible Emerging Playwrights Fund, an initiative dedicated to developing innovative original plays driven by language and voice. As an Audible commissioned playwright, she received funding and creative support to develop Evil Eye.

On the edge of my seat

I really enjoyed this! I listened to it all in one go. I especially enjoyed the style of phone calls (it’s hard to explain but it really works).

LOVED THIS!!!!

This was so great. I loved that it was short and was totally engrossed in it. Although it is not a typical audiobook it was a refreshing change. I hope to see more and I think this would make a fabulous movie!!!!

Well Worth A Listen

This enjoyable little Radioplay written exclusively for Audible is fantastic. It starts as a delightful story about a young American woman with traditional Indian parents (including a *very* superstitious matchmaker mother back in Dehli) pursuing marriage. The Mom-Daughter "I WANT GRANDCHILDREN!" dynamic is brilliantly explored. It then moves into a well-contrived supernatural story about a malevolent being attacking this family. The climax is a little ludicrous (+/- hokey), but I found the general premise captivating.
Madhuri Shekhar's story is cleverly told through a series of phone calls and voicemails - it's a rarely-used storytelling format that works beautifully.

The cast totally makes this story breathe. The emotiveness is incredible (you can actually hear actors choke up and sniffle during emotional conversations). The producers also add judicious emphasis music to underline dramatic scenes (only very occasionally overwhelming them).
Less fortunately, the sound modulation is often insufficient (treble issues and over-the-phone sound effects can make it hard to hear at times; some dialogue is quiet and some is ear-splitting.. Earbuds with this recording would be a mistake).

Altogether, this audiobook rates 7.5 stars out of 10. It's appropriately offered for free as part of the 'Plus' initiative - I wouldn't pay money for it.. but if you're sitting on the fence about downloading (and it's free), don't hesitate.
