About this listen
The Golden State Killer. The East Area Rapist. The Original Night Stalker. The Visalia Ransacker.
The monster who preyed on Californians from 1975 to 1986 was known by many aliases. And while numerous police sketches tried to capture his often-masked visage, the Golden State Killer spent more than 40 years not only faceless, but nameless.
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. To be sure, the chances of obtaining closure — or any form of justice — after so many years were slim to none, at best.
Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name.
Delivering all-new details about the investigation and a stunning final act to the events of Michelle McNamara's haunting best seller, I'll Be Gone in the Dark, this is the true story of how the suspected Golden State Killer was captured, as told, first-hand, by those closest to the case:
Paul Holes — the forensic criminologist and retired Costa County detective who spent 20 years trying to crack the Golden State Killer case, and finally did.
Steven Kramer — the FBI lawyer who pioneered the use of a public DNA database to unmask a killer, creating controversy in the process.
Jim Clemente (Host) — a retired FBI profiler and former New York City prosecutor who has investigated some of the highest profile criminal cases in U.S. history, including The Unabomber.

Story
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

Story
In 1911 two British heiresses, Claire and Dora Williamson, read a brochure about a revolutionary fasting treatment that promised a lifetime of good health. The sanatorium in the village of Olalla, west of Seattle, was surrounded by a beautiful forest, sparkling waters and fresh air. The sisters agreed it sounded perfect and exactly the restorative holiday they needed. But within a month of arriving, under the supervision of Doctor Linda Burfield Hazzard, Claire and Dora began to realise the frightening truth – they were not patients but prisoners at the isolated sanitorium.

Story
After more than a decade, when sisters Nikki, Sami, and Tori Knotek hear the word mom, it claws like an eagle’s talons, triggering memories that have been their secret since childhood. Until now. For years, behind the closed doors of their farmhouse in Raymond, Washington, their sadistic mother, Shelly, subjected her girls to unimaginable abuse, degradation, torture, and psychic terrors. Through it all, Nikki, Sami, and Tori developed a defiant bond that made them far less vulnerable than Shelly imagined.

Story
For centuries, the Japanese samurai were the unquestioned leaders of their society, maintaining their position through their iron will, Zen-like emotional control, and clan-building social skills. Today, in a world that focuses on instant gratification and self-indulgence, the way of the samurai is a challenging path to follow but will bring huge rewards to anyone who commits to it.

Not the best, not the worst
Honestly wasn’t impressed by the whole episode idea and it felt like Netflix did a documentary, took the audio and posted it on here. Disappointed in what I thought was more of a book style.

Calm after 30 years
How does a killer stay at large for 30 years? The reign of terror is unsermountable for the residants of Sacromento County. To hear the same voice on the phone again after the same number of years leaves the reader feeling the identical chills as that of his victims years ago.
The book is a page turner and will leave you reading late into the night.
The author writes with poise and is sensitive reinacting the terror felt by those directly victimized and famiies wondering if they will be next.

Emotional & Powerful
Thank you. Thank you for everything you’ve done. You Paul, and your team (including Michelle) have helped so many people and hearing the victims speak about how they have families, etc, it was just so much love and so heart warming. I cried a lot in the last few episodes and I’m so happy that he’s in Jail. You guys worked so hard , and you are all hero’s. I waited to read Michelle’s book until Evil Has a Name was available on Canadian Audible. So I listened to all of this back to back. Thanks for catching this monster , and giving light to victims in so many ways ❤️ SSDGM
