About this listen

In the first book of Peter May's critically acclaimed Enzo Files, forensics expert Enzo MacLeod wagers that he can solve six perplexing cold cases - and unexpectedly places himself directly in harm's way.

"Action-packed." (Entertainment Weekly)
"Brisk and thrilling." (The Baltimore Sun)
"Thoroughly engaging." (Library Journal)

Half-Scottish, half-Italian Enzo MacLeod used to be one of the top forensics experts in Scotland, and now he lives in Toulouse, working as a university professor. Divorced in Scotland and widowed in France, he has an estranged Scottish daughter and a French daughter he has raised by himself.

As if his life isn't complicated enough, he soon finds himself unexpectedly on the hunt for solutions to some vexing cold cases thanks to an ill-advised wager about the power of forensic science.

Meanwhile, in Paris, a man desperately seeking sanctuary flees into a church. The next day, his sudden disappearance will make him famous throughout France.

Deep in the catacombs below the City of Light, MacLeod unearths disturbing clues deliberately left behind by a killer. But as the retired forensics expert draws closer to the truth, he discovers he may just wind up the next victim for his troubles.

Another Peter May gem!

I was hooked the moment I started reading the Lewis man...then read all that series. I couldn’t get enough. I’ll be listening to the Critic forthwith !!
Peter May’s novels are ever unfolding. From chapter to chapter the mysteries evolve and keep you listening intently. I loved every word if it.
And Peter Forbes had the best, most calming reading voice, with just the right amount of intensity, enthusiasm and energy, and makes attach to every character in the novel with alternating accents. He’s brilliant too.
I’m a serious fan.

Not as good as the trilogy

While the plot was interesting, it took a long time to actually get into it- very detailed. It definitely was more compelling in the second half of the book. The trilogy novels were more real, more interesting.

Another great story by Peter May

This is the fifth book I have read/listened to by Peter May, and it is another great story. All his books have well developed characters and plot lines, and this one is no exception. I can't wait to continue with the series.

The narration by Peter Forbes is excellent, as usual.

Plot was ridiculous but book was engrossing none the less

I just couldn’t swallow the motive and the clues in this story. There is a whole lot of symbolism behind the various clues left by the murderer and the protagonist manages to figure them out. It’s as if the author was trying to impress the reader with his intellect. On the other hand the book is well written and exciting. The Scottish narrator is a pleasure to listen to.

Extraordinary People

Overall I enjoyed this novel very much. I find the constant use of French words annoying however. If you write a book in English you should use English words. As well I am very claustrophobic so the end was hard for me to read. But that said, a good book. Perhaps the problems I had with it would have been solved by actually reading it rather than listening by audible. That way I could have seen how the French words were spelled to make looking them up easier. And I could have skipped ahead of the excruciatingly claustrophobic passages.

Spellbinding to the end

A story with unpredictable twist and turns that kept me listening, speculating and interacting with the characters. The narrator was superb!

Worth the wait

Slow start but worth the wait to get to some interesting twists which end up a bit too tidily wrapped up but nonetheless interesting

Disappointing

I tripped over the Louise chronicles and read all four books in the trilogy… One after the other. The story was terrific and Location of Lewis and the outer Hebrides was turned into a character. The narrator… Peter Forbes spoke as if he was right there.

So I thought I would go with another book, but it was disappointing. The story was far to unbelievable… The constantly naming of Parisian streets was overdone by far… I didn’t care of where they were walking in those caverns was directly under the roof whatever… Overall, it just got very annoying . Sorry Mr. May… Love your first for Louise books and I look forward to more in that venue if possible.
I am visually impaired so excuse whatever strange words might appear
