Erst im Laufe der Erzählung - bittersüß nennt Raabe sie selbst an einer Stelle - wird deutlich, was der Hörer schon bald dunkel ahnt: dass ein lange zurückliegendes, aus Verzweiflung begangenes Verbrechen das Verhältnis der Pelzmanns zueinander und ihre Geschichte geprägt hat.
